DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 17/16 Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to No. 15/16 Duke team 84-59 on the road Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Sidney Cook led the Hokies (16-2, 3-2 ACC) with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Kendyl Brooks connected on five 3-pointers for a career-high 15 points. Regan Magarity recorded her sixth consecutive double-double of the season tallying 13 points and 11 rebounds. It ties the program’s longest streak set twice previously with Uju Ugoka hitting the mark in 2013 while Karen Garbis held the original record with six in 1978.

“We’re very disappointed in the outcome and very disappointed in the way we composed ourselves after they went on their run,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “I thought we got off to a pretty good start. We played with a lot of energy, a lot of confidence. Chanette [Hicks] got into foul trouble and that changes the complexion of who we are. I thought Sami Hill did a good job of manning the point, but it does throw us out of rhythm a little bit. I thought we were where we needed to be at halftime considering the circumstances, but we came out the second half and they went on that tremendous run. I was disappointed in the way we ran our offense after that.”

Duke got out to the early lead up 7-4 before the Hokies went on a 13-5 run to go on top 16-12 off a pair of free throws from Samantha Hill with 2:40 to go in the quarter. The Hokies were on top 21-16 heading into the second before the Blue Devils went on a 13-3, taking a 29-24 advantage just shy of the midway point. Tech tied it up with 4:20 to go as Vanessa Panousis drained one from outside, but Duke closed out the half with a 9-3 run to take a 38-32 lead into the break.

The Blue Devils opened the third frame with a 16-0 run and took their largest lead up 65-36 2:45 on the clock. Brooks connected from 3-point range on three consecutive trips down the court, but Tech was unable to get a run going on the offensive side as Duke shot 71.4 percent in the frame. Tech got no closer than 20 the rest of the way.

Duke connected on 50.8 percent from the field in the game while the Hokies hit 32.3 percent. The Blue Devils also forced the Hokies into 17 turnovers for 23 points. Tech held the advantage on the boards with 37 rebounds to Duke’s 35 and tallied 15 second-chance points.

Virginia Tech will return to the court on Sunday, Jan. 22 when the Hokies host No. 7 Florida State. Game time is set for noon at Cassell Coliseum.
