BLACKSBURG - The No. 17/16 Virginia Tech women's basketball team is set for a top-25 road contest as the Hokies travel to face No. 15/16 Duke. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

THE HOKIES (16-1, 3-1 ACC)
Virginia Tech defeated Wake Forest 72-70 the last time out. Chanette Hicks led the Hokies with a career-high 29 points on 13-of-23 from the field. In addition, Hicks handed out seven assists, grabbed five rebounds and tallied two steals. Sidney Cook added 15 points while Regan Magarity recorded her fifth consecutive double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Hokies struggled on the offensive side to start the game, connecting on just 12.5 percent from the field in the opening frame and fell behind by 13 early in the second quarter, trailing 22-9 with 7:37 on the clock. Tech answered with a 15-0 run to take its first lead of the game going on top 24-22. Wake reclaimed the advantage up 30-26, but the Hokies closed out the half with a 7-0 run to lead 33-30 at the break. Tech opened the third with a run to go up 46-36. Wake was never able to get closer than eight in the third quarter. Tech hit two baskets early in the fourth to take their largest lead of the game 61-45. Wake battled back with a 15-2 run, cutting it to 63-60 with 5:29 to go. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way as neither team was able to get a late run going. Tech went 3-of-4 from the line in the final minute to help secure the win.
Hicks leads the Hokies, averaging 17.2 points, 5.5 assists and 4.4 steals per game. Cook is posting 13.9 ppg and 9.6 rpg. Magarity is averaging 13.8 ppg and 10.1 rebounds per game while Hill is adding 10.9 ppg.
Magarity is currently the only player in the ACC averaging a double-double overall on the season. In league play Magarity has upped her numbers with 17.5 ppg, 13.5 rpg and is joined in the double-double category by Louisville’s Myisha Hines-Allen with 15.0 ppg and 11.2 rpg.
THE BLUE DEVILS (15-3, 3-2 ACC)
Duke fell to NC State 55-52 on Sunday. Rebecca Greenwell led the Blue Devils with 11 points and seven rebounds. Oderah Chidom added nine while Lexi Brown and Kyra Lambert tallied eight each.
The Wolfpack got out early on the Blue Devils, outscoring Duke 24-15 in the opening frame. NC State kept the momentum going through the second quarter to take the 35-21 advantage into the break. Duke came out strong in the third going on a 15-4 run to cut the Wolfpack lead to 39-36 in the final minute, but State was up 43-38 heading into the final 10 minutes. Duke went up by one twice during the final quarter and was up 52-51 with 2:42 to go, but State scored the final three points of the game to secure the win.
Greenwell leads the Blue Devils on the season, averaging 16.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Brown is adding 16.6 ppg while Lambert is tallying 9.2 ppg.
THE SERIES
This marks the 27th meeting between the Hokies and the Blue Devils with Duke leading 24-2 and currently holding a 22 game win streak in the series. This is just the third time in the history that both teams have been ranked. The last time was Jan. 9, 2005 when No. 2 Duke defeated No. 25 Virginia Tech 88-67 in Durham.
In last season’s contest, Duke edged the Hokies 66-62. Sidney Cook came off the bench for 20 points while Vanessa Panousis tallied 11. Chidom led the Blue Devils with 16 points, 11 rebounds and Greenwell tallied 15 points.
Up Next: Virginia Tech will return to Cassell to host No. 7 Florida State on Sunday, Jan. 22. Game time is noon.
