No. 15/16 Hokies host Wake in TV contest

BLACKSBURG - The No. 15/16 Virginia Tech women's basketball team is set to host Wake Forest on Jan. 16 in a 1 p.m. game at Cassell Coliseum. Monday's contest will be broadcast in the ACC region on RSN.

THE HOKIES (15-1, 2-1 ACC)
Virginia Tech fell to No. 14/14 Miami 82-75 on the road the last time out. It was the first loss on the season for the Hokies. Samantha Hill dropped in a career-high 23 points against The Hurricanes, connecting on 9-of-17 from the field. Regan Magarity recorded her eighth double-double of the season and fourth consecutive with 18 points and 14 rebounds while Chanette Hicks tallied 19 points.
The game was back-and-forth between the two teams with eight ties and 13 lead changes during the course of 40-minutes. Tech jumped out to the early 11-2 lead in the first quarter but the Canes came back to take a 20-18 lead in the second and were up 36-35 at the break. The contest continued to go back-and-forth out of the intermission as neither team led by more than four in the third, but Tech held a 58-57 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. Miami came out firing with a 13-4 run in the fourth to go up 70-62 at the midway point. The Hokies cut it down to five and trailed 8-75 with 15 seconds to go, but the Canes connected on free throws down the stretch to help seal the win.
Hicks leads the Hokies, averaging 16.4 points, 5.4 assists and 4.4 steals per game. Sidney Cook is posting 13.9 ppg and 9.6 rpg. Magarity is averaging 13.8 ppg and 10.1 rebounds per game while Hill is adding 11.3 ppg.
Magarity is currently the only player in the ACC averaging a double-double overall on the season. In league play Magarity has upped her numbers with 18.7 ppg, 14.7 rpg and is joined in the double-double category by Louisville’s Myisha Hines-Allen with 16.0 ppg and 11.2 rpg.
THE DEMON DEACONS (10-6, 1-2 ACC)
Wake Forest picked up its first league win, defeating Clemson 68-56 on Thursday. Amber Campbell led a quartet of Deacs in double-digits with 18 points. Elisa Penna added 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Ariel Stephenson tallied 16 points while Milan Quinn chipped in 10 points.
Campbell joined Wake’s 1,000-point club with her performance against the Tigers. The Deacs got out to the early lead and were up 20-10 at the end of the first quarter. Wake built its lead to 20 with just over a minute remaining in the half, but Clemson scored the rest of the points to cut the Deacs lead to 14 (39-24) going into the break. The Tigers outscored the Deacs 15-11 in the third to cut it to a 10-point game and pulled within five with 7:40 to play. Wake was able to hold off the rally for the win.
Campbell leads the Deacs with 14.1 points per game. Stephenson is adding 13.9 ppg while Penna is tallying 13.5 ppg. Quinn is recording 10.5 points and team-best 9.7 rebounds per game.
THE SERIES
This marks the 25th meeting between the Hokies and the Deacs with the series tied 12-12. Tech has won the past two meetings including a 54-48 last season in Winston-Salem.
Cook and Hicks led the Hokies with 15 points each and while former Tech player Hannah Young added 13 points. Quinn had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Deacs and Penna added 12 points.
Up Next: Virginia Tech will take to the road to face No. 12/14 Duke on Thursday, Jan. 19. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
