Three Hokies tally double-doubles in win

BLACKSBURG – Regan Magarity knocked down 24 points and grabbed a career-high tying 17 rebounds to help propel No. 18/20 Virginia Tech women’s basketball team past North Carolina 76-68 on Monday evening at Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies improve to 14-0 on the season and 1-0 in the league.
Magarity’s numbers mark the 20th time in program history a Hokie has tallied 20+ points and 15+ rebounds and just the second time in ACC play. Kerri Gardin had 22 points, 16 rebounds in 2005 against Florida State.
Sidney Cook and Chanette Hicks added double-doubles of their own. Cook had 16 points and 13 rebounds while Hicks tallied 10 points and 10 assists. Samantha Hill recorded 14 points in the Hokies’ win.
This is the first time since 2010 that the Hokies have had three players with double-doubles. The last time was against William & Mary with Monet Tellier (14 points, 10 rebounds), Alyssa Fenyn (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Nikki Davis (16 points, 12 assists).
“Great win for our kids, for the team, for the program,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “I think that UNC, has some terrific guards and I thought we did a really good job of running them off the 3-point line in the first half. Just really proud of our kids; I thought we played well. We jumped out, but had a little bit of a lull in the second quarter and to start the third. We regrouped and they got themselves back on track and we were able to come away with a really good win to start ACC play.”
The Hokies came out strong in the first quarter, dropping in five from outside the arc in the opening 10 minutes as Tech led 24-16 at the end of the frame behind nine points and five boards from Cook. In the second quarter, both teams were sluggish on the offensive side with the Tar Heels holding the slight scoring advantage 16-13, but the Hokies were still on top at the break 37-32.
Coming out of the break, Tech extended its lead to 40-32 as Magarity completed the 3-point play. But the Tar Heels went to work, going on a 12-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 44-42 with 6:02 on the clock. The Hokies answered, outscoring UNC 10-0 over the next three minutes to reclaim the advantage, going on top 52-44. UNC again looked to make a run, cutting it back down to a 54-51 game with 1:03 to go and trailed 56-51 at the end of the quarter.
Tech opened the final quarter on a 9-1 run to push the lead to 65-52 off a Magarity jumper with six minutes remaining. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way, as Carolina got no closer than seven to close out the game.
UNC held the advantage on the boards 51-46, but the Hokies tallied 21 second chance points to the Tar Heels’ 14 behind Magarity’s seven offensive boards.
Destinee Walker led the Heels with 22 points while Stephanie Watts had 18 points, 10 rebounds. Paris Kea chipped in 10 points.
The Hokies will go on the road for a game at Clemson on Sunday, Jan. 8. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Littlejohn Coliseum.
