BLACKSBURG – The No. 23/23 Virginia Tech women’s basketball team continued rolling in the early season, downing Radford 71-52 to improve to 12-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
Tech’s 12-0 start matches the second best start in program history. The Hokies got off to similar starts in 2005-06 and 2003-04. The best start was during the 1998-99 campaign when Tech opened 18-0.
Chanette Hicks led the Hokies with 18 points, eight steals, seven rebounds and four assists. Sidney Cook posted her third double-double in four games with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Regan Magarity added 15 points and eight boards.
“That’s a tough game, it always is,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “The timing of it is tough, the kids just finished exams. They’re exhausted, they watched campus empty out and on the horizon they have a couple days off. It’s really easy for them to lose focus. But I am very proud of the way our kids responded. We were preaching being focused because all that they have accomplished so far comes with some responsibility, you have to go out and protect it. We started off sluggish, but I thought we really picked it up midway through the second quarter and into the third.”
Both teams started off slow, but the Hokies closed out the first quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 21-16 lead. Radford cut it down to a two-point game in the second, but Tech again answered, this time outscoring the Highlanders 12-2 to go into the break on top 34-22.
The Hokies went to work in the third quarter, holding the Highlanders to single-digit scoring while dropping in 24 points to push the advantage to 28 and head into the final quarter on top 58-30. Hicks and Cook combined for 16 of the Hokies’ 24 points in the third. In the final frame, the Highlanders held the advantage, outscoring the Hokies 22-13 but the Tech lead was too much to overcome.
Virginia Tech forced 19 Radford turnovers for 24 points. The two teams were close to even on the rebounds with the Hokies holding a slight 45-44 advantage, but the Highlanders had 14 second chance points to Tech’s 11.
This marked the final game for the Hokies before the holiday break. Tech will be back on the court on Friday, Dec. 30 in a 7 p.m. game against Delaware State at Cassell Coliseum.
