No. 25 Virginia Tech to host Bowling Green

BLACKSBURG - The 25th-ranked Virginia Tech women's basketball team will host Bowling Green on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 3:30 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum. It is the second game in a double-header with the Tech men's team who hosts Ole Miss at noon.

THE HOKIES (9-0)
Virginia Tech is off to a 9-0 start this season after defeating Central Connecticut State 81-47 the last time out. Sidney Cook led a quintet of Hokies in double-digit scoring with 17 points while grabbing 10 boards. Chanette Hicks added 16 points, tallied four assists and five steals. Regan Magarity posted a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Vanessa Panousis dropped in 12 points.

Tech jumped out to the early lead, opening the game on a 13-0 run before the Blue Devils were able to get on the board from the charity line with 3:14 to go in the first quarter. CCSU got it down to single digits several times during the second frame, and were within nine (27-18) with four minutes to go before the Hokies answered with an 11-0 run to push the lead, taking a 45-23 lead into the locker room. In the third quarter the two teams kept it close offensively, with the Hokies outscoring the Blue Devils just 13-12. Tech went to work in the final frame, closing out the final 10 minutes with a 23-12 advantage.

Hicks leads the Hokies in the early season, averaging 16.8 points, 4.3 assists and 4.7 steals per game. Cook is posting 14.3 ppg and 8.8 rpg. Magarity is averaging 12.7 ppg and 8.4 rebounds per game while Panousis is dropping in 8.9 ppg and Samantha Hill is tallying 8.8 ppg.

THE FALCONS (4-5)
Bowling Green defeated DII Ohio Valley 82-46 in the Falcons’ last outing. Rachel Konieczki led the Falcons with 13 points. Carly Santoro and Sydney Lambert tallied 12 points each. Abby Siefker led on the boards with 13 rebounds.

BGSU led the entre game and held a 19-9 advantage after the first quarter and was up 40-23 at the intermission. The Falcons pushed their lead in the second half, outscoring the Fighting Scots 42-23 after the break. Bowling Green also faced Virginia last week, falling to the Cavaliers 67-47. Haley Puk led the Falcons with 10 points while Santoro and Rachel Myers added eight points apiece.

Santoro is leading the Falcons with 13.0 points per game and is grabbing 6.1 rpg. Lambert is adding 9.0 ppg. Siefker leads on the boards, grabbing 8.6 rpg.

THE SERIES
This marks the first meeting between the Hokies and BGSU. Tech is 10-9 all-time against teams from the Mid-American Conference. Tech most recently faced Ohio University last season in the second round of the WNIT. The Hokies fell to the regular-season MAC Champion Bobcats 64-57. Cook had a big outing for the Hokies in that game posting 22 points and 10 rebounds in Athens, Ohio.

Up Next: Virginia Tech will have some time off for the exam break before going on the road to face Auburn on Dec. 18.
