BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 25th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s basketball team defeated Gardner-Webb 76-42 on Monday night extending its season opening win streak to eight games.
Vanessa Panousis made a 3-pointer, en route to 14 total points, on the first possession of the game and the Hokies never looked back, leading the entire way.
“That’s a good win for us,” said coach Kenny Brooks. “We were working on certain things and the motto of the day was ‘get better’. We think that we can have a really good year if we continue to get better.”
The game featured five Tech players scoring in double figures for the first time since the January 23, 2015 game against Wake Forest. Regan Magarity notched her first double-double of the season recording 10 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Her counterpart in the post Sidney Cook had another strong effort scoring 17 points on 8-13 shots from the field and grabbing seven rebounds. Chanette Hicks continued her outstanding start to the season tonight with 16 points, four rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Kendyl Brooks rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10.
“I thought we got some really good performances. I thought Sidney was tremendous in the second half, Regan was steady, I really appreciate her efforts,” said Brooks. “Chanette did a really good job and Kendyl and Vanessa did a really good job of taking the right shots and I think they will step up for us.”
The two teams kept it close early in the opening period with the Hokies leading by just five with 2:11 to play before scoring seven unanswered to push the advantage to double-digits. Gardner-Webb got it back under 10 in the second frame, but Tech again responded to take a 17-point 36-19 lead into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, the Hokies kept their run alive to pull ahead 41-19. GWU was unable to get anything going in the second half as Tech outscored the Bulldogs 40-23 after the break.
The Bulldogs were led by 11 points from Alexus Hill and 10 points from Tierra Huntsman. Gardner-Webb drops to 3-4 on the season.
The Hokies return to Cassell Coliseum on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. to take on the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils.
