Hicks earns ACC co-Player of the Week honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech sophomore guard Chanette Hicks has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week, sharing the honor with UNC’s sophomore guard Stephanie Watts, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.

Hicks led the Hokies to a 2-0 week, including a 67-63 win over No. 17/16 Tennessee. Hicks registered a career-high tying 24 points against the Lady Vols while grabbing five rebounds and a career-best eight steals. With the Hokies trailing by five early in the third quarter, Hicks went to work in the second half, scoring 17 points. In the final minute with Tech holding a one-point lead, the Norfolk, Virginia, native scored four unanswered points to help secure the win. Earlier in the week, Hicks dropped 22 points and had six steals in a 71-61 win at College of Charleston.

Watts set an ACC record with 10 3-pointers against Charleston Southern, and finished the game scoring a career-high 39 points in the 93-77 win over the Bucs. Watts also registered her third double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds in a come-from-behind victory over Minnesota (91-77) in the Junkanoo Jam in the Bahamas to complete the week. She averaged 24.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2.0 assists per game in a 2-1 week for the Tar Heels.

This is Hicks’ first Player of the Week honors. She was named Rookie of the Week on Feb. 29, 2016.

Hicks and the rest of the Hokies will be back on the court on Thursday, Dec. 1 when they host Nebraska at 7 p.m. as part of the 2016 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
