Hokies run past No. 17/16 Lady Vols 67-63
Hicks 24 points and eight steals powers Hokies

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team defeated the No. 16/17 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols on Sunday afternoon to remain undefeated on the season. It marked the program’s first victory over a ranked team since the Tennessee matchup last season and gives the program its best start since the 2005-06 season.
“Tremendous win for our program and particularly these kids,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “Yes, it’s Tennessee and obviously they’re a very storied program and so much history behind what they do, but it was important to us because we’ve asked these kids to sacrifice, to buy-in and now they are starting to see some of the fruits of their labor. I am very proud of them.”
Chanette Hicks poured in 24 points to lead all scorers on the afternoon. This was the third time on the young season that Hicks has scored at least 20 points. Hicks also set a career high with eight steals in the game, as part of the Hokie defense that caused 21 turnovers resulting in 21 Tech points. Sidney Cook recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Regan Magarity tallied 16 points.
After an opening half that saw the Hokies lead for much of it, a 13-4 run in the second quarter gave Tennessee a 31-28 lead going into the intermission. The two teams kept it close in the third and were tied at 44-44 with 3:27 to go in the quarter before the Hokies used a 13-0 run to go on top 57-44 in the opening minutes of the final frame.
The Lady Vols responded with a run of their own, closing the gap to 62-61 with just under a minute to go. Hicks hit a layup to give the Hokies a three-point lead with 30 seconds to play. She was fouled on the next possession and stepped to the line to sink both charity shots, putting Tech up 66-61. UT would sink one more basket, but a Samantha Hill free throw with two seconds on the clock helped seal the win.
Tennessee led the battle on the boards 53-43, but the Hokies had more points in the paint 46-34.
The Hokies play next on Thursday, Dec. 1 as they welcome in the Nebraska Cornhuskers into Cassell Coliseum at 7 p.m. as part of the 2016 ACC/Big Ten Challenge
