Hokies outlast Charleston, 71-61

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team moved to 5-0 on the season as the Hokies defeated College of Charleston 71-61 on Tuesday evening. It marks the program’s best start since the 2013-14 season.
Chanette Hicks led the Hokies with 22 points while tying a career-high six steals. Sidney Cook added 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds while Samantha Hill dropped in 12 points. Regan Magarity and Kaela Kinder each had eight rebounds as well.
“We didn’t have that fight throughout the ball game I would have liked, but I give credit to College of Charleston, they came out, they fought and they never gave up,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “They pushed us to our limits, but good things are going to come out of this game. We had some adversity, we struggled a little bit and we overcame it. I was very proud of the kids. Any time you win a basketball game you have to be happy, but we understand we have some things we need to work on.”
Virginia Tech opened the game outscoring the Cougars 20-9 in the opening quarter. Tech pushed its lead to 16 and led 33-17 with 7:26 to go in the second. Charleston chipped away at the lead, using a 13-7 run to cut it to 37-30 with just under two minutes to go. The Hokies closed out the half scoring four unanswered to take the 41-30 lead into the break.
Coming out of the intermission Charleston continued its run, outscoring the Hokies 15-7 to cut it to a three-point 48-45 game. Tech closed out the period with five straight as Hicks connected on a 3-pointer and a jumper to push the Hokies’ lead to 53-45.
The Cougars again made a push coming out of the quarter break, pulling within one (53-52) with 7:35 to go. Tech responded with an 11-4 run to go back on top by eight with just under a minute to play. In the final minute, the Hokies connected on 7-of-10 from the line to secure the win.
Charleston held the lead on the boards 39-36, but the Hokies held the slight 10-9 lead on second chance points. Tech forced 18 turnovers while only giving the ball up eight times for a 16-7 advantage in points.
Breanna Bolden led the Cougars (1-3) a double-double recording 16 points and 10 rebounds. Tanisha Brown dropped in 17 poings while Dajah Logan and Darien Huff tallied 12 points each.
Virginia Tech will have a few days off for the Thanksgiving break before returning home to host No. 17/16 Tennessee on Sunday, Nov. 27. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
