Hokies hold off UCF, 67-64
Tech nets 10 3-pointers in win

ORLANDO – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team dropped in 10 3-pointers on Saturday afternoon to defeat UCF 67-64 on the road at CFE Arena in Orlando, Florida.
Virginia Tech improved to 4-0 on the season while handing the Knights (3-1) their first loss. Sidney Cook led the Hokies with 17 points and nine rebounds. Chanette Hicks tallied 15 points and dished out five assists. Kendyl Brooks rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11 points on 4-of-9 from the field including 3-of-6 from outside.
“It was a fun game,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “It was fun watching the kids and them just coming together. They stayed together. We had a little adversity throughout the game, but I thought they overcame each and every obstacle and together we won this basketball game. We had contributions from so many different people. Collectively it was a great win and so many kids came out and played for us today.”
Both teams got off to a slow start before the Hokies went on an 8-0 run, bookended by 3-pointers from Hill and Hicks, to go ahead 8-1. UCF answered with a run of its own that stretched the two quarters, taking a 16-12 lead with 7:17 to go in the second. UCF held the advantage throughout much of the second frame and were on top 22-19 with three minutes remaining. Hill drained a 3-pointer to tie it up at 22-22. The two teams traded baskets and were knotted with 24 seconds to go. Hicks hit a jumper heading into the break to give Tech a 26-24 lead.
The Hokies extended their lead to five coming out of the break, but UCF tied it up at 38-38 with 1:59 to play in the third. Diandra DaRosa drained a pair of free throws late in the quarter to put Tech on top 46-43 with 13 seconds remaining, but a 3-pointer from UCF’s Kayla Thigpen as time ticked off tied it up heading into the final frame
UCF scored the first basket of the quarter, but Tech went on an 8-2 run capped by a 3-pointer from Brooks to go on top 54-50. The two teams were again tied (56-56) with 2:46 to go before the Hokies scored four unanswered to reclaim the lead for good. UCF looked to make a push in the final minute, cutting it to a 1-point 65-64 game, but a pair of free throws from Cook with six seconds to play helped seal the win for Tech as a UCF 3-pointer fell short as the buzzer sounded.
Zykira Lewis led the Knights with 14 points. Jamesha Paul added 12 while Fifi Ndour tallied nine points and nine boards.
UCF held a 43-39 advantage on the boards and shot 40.3 percent from the field. The Hokies connected on 38.5 percent from the field including a 35.7 percent clip from outside. Tech also converted for 18 points on 17 UCF turnovers.
The last time the Hokies connected on 10 3-pointers in a game was Dec. 13, 2015 against Coppin State.
The Hokies will remain on the road to play College of Charleston on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in Charleston, South Carolina.
