BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team defeated Presbyterian 67-36 on Wednesday night at Cassell Coliseum behind a powered performance from senior Sidney Cook who tallied a double-double with by 16 points and 12 rebounds. Fellow senior Samantha Hill added 13 points.
Vanessa Panousis hit another career milestone during the contest. At the 6:05 mark in the fourth quarter, Panousis set the new school record for made 3-pointers, passing Carrie Mason’s mark of 200 set in 2006. She ended the night connecting on three shots from behind the arc.
“I’m happy for her because it’s well deserved,” head coach Kenny Brooks said. “I think that it’s going to benefit us more because she saw the ball go through the basket and now she can step up with confidence.”
The Hokies got off to a slow start scoring just nine points during the opening period, but stretched their advantage in the second period using a 14-2 run to take a 30-19 lead in to the break. Tech maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half as the Blue Hose never got closer than 13 the rest of the way.
The Hokies really took advantage of their size inside scoring 36 points in the paint compared to Presbyterian’s 10 and out-rebounding the Blue Hose by 16.
Chanette Hicks once again provided Virginia Tech with great energy coming up with six steals to go along with her 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Hokies concluded their home stand to open the season 3-0, reaching that starting mark for the first time since the 2013-14 season. Next up, the Hokies hit the road for contests at UCF on November 19 and at Charleston on November 22.
