Tech hosts Presbyterian Wednesday

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team will wrap up its three game home stand on Wednesday, Nov. 16 when the Hokies host Presbyterian at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.

THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech is off to a 2-0 start this season after rallying for a 73-63 win over Georgetown on Sunday. Regan Magarity led the Hokies with 23 points and eight rebounds. Chanette Hicks tallied 16 points, five assists and three steals while Sami Hill dropped in 14 points and had five rebounds. Sidney Cook recorded 11 points and five boards.

The Hokies were behind much of the game and trailed 44-37 in the third before Magarity led a 14-6 run to tie it up just before the quarter break. Tech opened the final quarter with a 10-4 run to take its first lead since late in the first quarter. Georgetown tied it back up with just over five minutes to go, but the Hokies put up an impressive defensive stand in the final minutes, allowing just one field goal from the Hoyas as Tech closed out the game with a 12-2 run.

Hicks leads the Hokies in the early season, averaging 20 points, four assists and three steals per game. Magarity is tallying 17.5 ppg and a team-high 7.5 rebounds per game. Hill is adding 12.5 ppg and Cook 10.5 ppg.

THE BLUE HOSE
Presbyterian moved to 0-2 on the season after falling to USC Upstate 55-48 the last time out. Janie Miles and Kaycie Reffner led PC with 14 points each. Rebecca Walker grabbed nine rebounds to lead the team on the boards.

The Blue Hose opened the game strong and was up 15-10 at the end of the first quarter, but Upstate used a 19-9 run in the second to take the lead at the break. The Spartans pushed their lead to 46-30 heading into the final frame. PC cut the lead down to five in the final minutes, but the Spartans connected at the line to secure the win.

Miles is leading the Blue Hose in scoring early in the season, averaging 13.0 points per game. Reffner is chipping in 8.5 ppg with Walker grabbing a team-high 6.0 rpg while adding 7.0 ppg.

THE SERIES
The Hokies hold the lead in the series 4-0 and won last year’s meeting 58-44 in Blacksburg. Vanessa Panousis led Tech with 16 points and six assists while Magarity tallied 14 points and nine boards.

Taylor Petty came off the bench for the Blue Hose to lead the team with 12 points and Cortney Storey tallied 11.

Up Next: Virginia Tech will hit the road for its first contests outside of Cassell Coliseum, traveling to UCF on Saturday, Nov. 19 for a 2 p.m. game in Orlando, Florida.
