Hokies rally past Georgetown 73-63
Magarity leads team with 23 points and eight rebounds

BLACKSBURG – After trailing for much of the game, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team rallied, outscoring Georgetown 22-10 in the final quarter to defeat the Hoyas 73-63 at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia.
“It was a great win and I’m very proud of our kids,” head coach Kenny Brooks said. “They showed me something today. I said it earlier that every game I’m going to learn something about them and they’re going to learn something about me and today I felt like we were a tough basketball team. They gutted it out, showed a lot of grit and determination. I thought all of the players stepped in and were tough.”
Virginia Tech (2-0) had four players in double-digits for the second straight game and was led by Regan Magarity with 23 points and eight rebounds. Chanette Hicks added 16 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Samantha Hill knocked down 14 points and grabbed five boards while Sidney Cook chipped in 11 and five, respectively.
The Hokies trailed Georgetown (1-1) early in the game with the Hoyas taking a 23-18 lead after the opening frame. Tech held the slight one-point advantage in the second, but the Hoyas were on top 37-33 at the break.
In the second half, the two teams traded baskets with Georgetown going up by seven (44-37) in the first three minutes. Tech cut it down to two, but the Hoyas continued to hold on to the lead and were up 51-49 with 2:40 to go in the third. A pair of free throws from Vanessa Panousis tied it up at 51-51, but a Georgetown layup with 22 seconds to go before the quarter break put the Hoyas ahead 53-51 heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Hokies opened the final stanza with a 10-4 run to take their first lead, 61-57, since late in the first quarter. Georgetown answered, tying it up at 61-61 with just over five minutes remaining in the game. The Hokies put up an impressive defensive stand in the final minutes, allowing just one field goal from the Hoyas as Tech closed out the game with a 12-2 run to secure the win.
Virginia Tech shot 45.5 percent (20-44) from the field and went 31-40 (77.5 percent) from the line. Georgetown shot 38.4 percent (28-73) from the field and was 4-8 at the stripe. The Hoyas held the slight 35-32 advantage on the boards.
Dionna White had 19 points to lead the Hoyas while Dorothy Adomako added 14 and Faith Woodard tallied 11.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Wednesday, Nov. 16 when they host Presbyterian. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
