Hokies sign five for 2016-17
Tech inks five more to go with early signees Kinder and Parker

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech head women’s basketball coach Kenny Brooks announces the signing of five additional players including Michelle Berry, Kendyl Brooks, Diandra DaRosa, Erin Garner and Jaiden McCoy for the 2016-17 season. They will join Genesis Parker and Kaela Kinder who signed during the fall.

6-2, Forward
Cal State Fullerton / Miami Country Day
Miami, Fla.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Attended Cal State Fullerton for freshman season where she appeared in and started 29 games… Averaged 14.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game… Earned All-Big West Honorable Mention Team and All-Freshman Team… Played for Miami Country Day High School where she was a two-year letterwinner and helped the team to a pair of state titles… Averaged 14 points and 13 rebounds per game as a senior… Also played varsity soccer, earning First Team All-League honors.

Personal: Michelle Katherine Berry… Born August 10, 1996… Daughter of Natanya James… Has two brothers Michael and Malcolm Berry… Majoring in Communications.

Brooks on Berry: “We are very excited about Michelle’s arrival to Virginia Tech. Although she has only been playing organized basketball for three years, she shows tremendous potential and will be very influential in the success of our program.”

Kendyl Brooks
5-8, Guard
Spotswood High School
Harrisonburg, Va.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Graduated from Spotswood High School… Four-time All-District selection and earned All-Conference honors junior and senior seasons… Helped team to state championship in 2016… Ranked 12th guard in state of Virginia by MaxPreps.

Personal: Kendyl Lauren Brooks… Born February 18, 1998… Daughter of Kenny and Chrissy Brooks… Father Kenny served as head women’s basketball coach at James Madison University (337-122, .756) before being named Virginia Tech head coach on March 28, 2016… Has three siblings, Nick, Chloe and Gabby… Majoring in Health Sciences.

Brooks on Brooks: “Kendyl will be a great addition to our team. She is a tremendous shooter and her knowledge of our system will accelerate her maturation.”

Diandra DaRosa
5-7, Guard
ASA College / William E. Tolman
Pawtucket, R.I.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Attended ASA College… Averaged 14.1 points, 5.4 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game, helping the Avengers to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament for the third consecutive season… During high school, earned Gatorade Player of the Camp at Syracuse camp during junior season.

Personal: Diandra Brianne DaRosa… Born June 21, 1995… Daughter of Benvinda Monteiro… Has a brother, James Duckett… Majoring in Communications.

Brooks on DaRosa: “Diandra is going to bring experience to our backcourt and I anticipate her immediate production to be beneficial to our program.”

Erin Garner
6-3, Forward
Georgia Tech / Trenton Catholic
Philadelphia, Pa.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Attended FIU in the spring after transferring from Georgia Tech… Played in two games for the Yellow Jackets as a freshman before being sidelined by injury… Appeared in six games as a sophomore prior to transferring… Was ranked #68 in ELITE Prospect’s Top 100 and the 10th best forward coming out of high school… Listed as #127 recruit by Blue Star Basketball Report and earned three-stars and rating of 90 by ESPN HoopGurlz… Averaged a double-double senior season at Trenton Catholic.

Personal: Erin Denee Garner… Born February 12, 1996… Daughter of Urian Garner and Narissia Williams… Has five siblings, Quran, Shelia, Malik, Rym and Brittney… Brother Malik played basketball at UMBC… Business major.

Brooks on Garner: “Erin will provide much needed depth in our front court.”

Jaiden McCoy
6-3, Forward
Farragut High School
Knoxville, Tenn.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Named 48th post and overall 89th player and a three-star recruit by ESPN HoopGurlz… Tabbed 56th post in state of Tennessee during senior year… Listed as a four-star recruit by ProspectsNation.com… Was sidelined by injury during senior season, but averaged 12.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game during junior campaign and was named a second-team All-PrepXtra selection… Helped lead the team to a district title and the Class 3A state sectionals.

Personal: Jaiden Blossom McCoy… Born October 12, 1997… Daughter of Max McCoy and Kristen Blossom… Has two siblings Madi and Ashton… Interior Design major.

Brooks on McCoy: “Jaiden is a talented front court player that will add size and depth in that area.”

Kinder and Parker signed with the Hokies during the fall early signing period. Parker was named USA Today Second Team All-Virginia following her senior campaign as well as to the VHSL 1st-team 6A All-State team for the second consecutive season. She is a four-star recruit and ranked 67th overall by ESPN HoopGurlz. Kinder was named NYSSWA Fifth Team All-State this season and is a three-star recruit as listed by ESPN HoopGurlz.
