BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women’s basketball head coach Kenny Brooks announces additions to his staff, as Jennifer Brown, Tim Clark and Samantha Mitchell join Brooks in Blacksburg. In addition, Britney Anderson will stay on in her role as an assistant coach.
Brown joins the Hokies as an assistant coach after serving in a similar role at James Madison since 2010. During her tenure with the Dukes, the team made six trips to the postseason, including four NCAA appearances. Brown coached Kayla Cooper-Williams to CAA Rookie of the Year honors this past season. During the 2014-15, Brown coached Lauren Okafor, who went on to be taken as the 34th pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft. Brown played for the Dukes from 2006-08, helping JMU to a 51-16 record, a trip to the NCAA Tournament and a trip to the WNIT during her two seasons. She earned a bachelor’s degree in justice studies in 2007 and a master’s in kinesiology in 2008, both from JMU. In addition, Brown is a 2013 graduate of the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy and attended the ACA Forum in 2015.
“I am excited that Jennifer Brown will be joining our staff here at Virginia Tech,” Brooks said. “Jen brings a wealth of knowledge and her passion and enthusiasm for the sport will benefit our student athletes and Hokie Nation tremendously. Jen will work primarily with the posts where she has helped the development of several players who have gone on to be drafted into the WNBA. She’s a tireless worker on the recruiting trail and will offer great mentorship to our student-athletes.”
Clark comes to Tech in the role of director of operations, a position he previously held at James Madison under Brooks since 2010. Prior to that, Clark was a graduate assistant with the program after having served four seasons as the head team manager with the Dukes. His experience has included assisting the coaching staff in managing the day-to-day operations of the program and he will continue to do so at Tech while also working with the travel plans and Hokie Hardwood Club.
Mitchell joins the Hokies as director of player personnel after having served as the assistant director of operations at JMU last season. Prior to that, Mitchell was an event management intern for Sports Backers and worked as a group sales associate for the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Mitchell, a 2014 graduate of JMU, worked for three seasons as a student manager for the Dukes before earning her bachelor’s degree in sport and recreation management. In 2015, Mitchell earned her master’s of education in sport leadership from VCU.
“Having Tim Clark and Samantha Mitchell join our staff is a tremendous compliment for the day-to-day operations of our program,” Brooks said. “These are two of the best in the business and the chemistry and trust that we share allow me to focus on the basketball version of the job knowing they will handle a lot of the administrative duties.”
Anderson will remain a member of the Virginia Tech coaching staff as an assistant coach after having served last season in the same role with the Hokies. Prior to joining the Tech staff, Anderson was an assistant at Radford (2013-15), where she developed two All-Big South honorees and helped the Highlanders become the league’s top 3-point shooting team. Anderson played for the Hokies from 2003-07, helping Tech to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a WNIT berth. During her career, she shot 44.6 percent from the field and averaged 10.2 points per game during her senior season.
“I’m excited to have Britney Anderson continue on staff with us,” Brooks stated. “She has a great understanding of this university and the history of the women’s basketball program. She is a tremendous recruiter and a great role model for our student-athletes. Her ability to relate to recruits and student-athletes is a great plus for us.”
