BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team swept Virginia in the regular season for the first time as the Hokies defeated the Cavaliers 60-55 on Sunday afternoon in the regular-season finale.
Trailing 46-36 with 9:43 left in the fourth quarter, the Hokies would retake the lead on a 16-0 run that spanned four minutes. Taijah Campbell and Chanette Hicks combined for 11 of the 16 points during the run as Tech went up 52-46 with 5:10 left.
The Cavaliers responded as they went on a 7-0 run to go up 53-52 with 1:48 remaining but Chanette Hicks would convert a layup and a free throw to complete a three-point play for a 55-53 Tech lead. Virginia would tie it on a layup from Aliyah Huland El with 1:04 left but that was the last basket for the Cavaliers. Three made free throws from Hicks and two more from Regan Magarity would clinch the victory for the Hokies.
With the win, Tech improves to 17-12 overall and 5-11 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia drops to 16-14 overall and 6-10 in ACC play.
Hicks scored a career-high 19 points in the victory with eight rebounds and four assists. Campbell had a season-high 14 points on senior day with six rebounds and two steals. Sidney Cook also added seven points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Tech shot 22-of-53 (41.5 percent) from the floor while Virginia was 22-of-59 (37.3 percent). The Hokies had a 36-34 rebounding advantage and outscored the Cavaliers 30-22 in the paint and 30-11 off the bench.
The Hokies scored the opening basket on a jumper from Campbell but the Cavaliers went on a 6-0 run to take a 6-2 lead with 6:14 left in the first quarter. Tech would respond with their own 6-0 run courtesy of two baskets from Campbell and a Cook jumper to cap off the run and give the Hokies an 8-6 lead. The two teams were tied 11-11 after the first quarter.
Virginia went on a 10-3 run to start the second quarter and built a 23-14 lead with 4:45 left in the half. The Hokies responded with an 8-0 run to close the gap within 23-22 with 1:48 remaining before the break. Virginia knocked down two free throws and the teams traded baskets as Virginia held a 27-24 lead at halftime before outscoring the Hokies 17-12 in the third quarter to build a 44-36 lead heading into the fourth.
