BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team outscored Clemson 51-20 over the second and third quarters to pull away for a 79-49 victory on Monday night at Cassell Coliseum.
After a slow first quarter that ended with Tech trailing 10-8, the Hokies shot 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from the floor in the second while limiting the Tigers to just 2-of-9 shooting during the stanza. Tech ultimately outscored Clemson 23-5 in the second quarter to take the lead for good.
The Hokies continued to rack up points after the break as the Hokies dropped in 28 during the third quarter. It marks the most points in a quarter for Tech this season since scoring 29 against George Washington on Nov. 15.
“We needed a game to bounce back,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “I thought we started a little slow after being off for a week. I thought the second and third period we played very well, got good shots and worked on our defense. It was a good win. Now we have to get ready for a tough game on Thursday.”
With the win, the Hokies improve to 14-3 overall and 2-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Clemson falls to 4-13 overall and 0-4 in ACC play.
Vanessa Panousis scored a team-high 19 points as she went 7-of-10 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from outside the arc. Regan Magarity had 12 points and five rebounds while Rachel Camp came off the bench for 11 points and seven boards. Chanette Hicks had eight points, five assists, three steals and six rebounds.
The Hokies bench provided a big lift for Tech as they outscored Clemson 29-3 in bench points. Tech also held an advantage on the glass outrebounding the Tigers 42-31.
The second quarter started off with back-to-back layups from Magarity and Taijah Campbell before Panousis hit a 3-pointer to make it 15-10. With a 22-15 lead, the Hokies scored the final nine points of the quarter over a 2:18 stretch make it 31-15.
Tech’s defense limited the Tigers to shooting 27.3-percent for the entire first half and held them 0-of-3 from 3-point range. The Hokies also held an 18-8 advantage in points in the paint and a 10-3 advantage in bench scoring.
The smallest lead the Hokies held during the second half was 18 points during the third quarter and their largest lead was 35.
The Hokies will again be at home on Thursday night as they host ACC foe NC State. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on RSN.
