SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to No. RV/25 Syracuse, 60-39 on Sunday afternoon in ACC action at the Carrier Dome.
The Hokies (13-3, 1-2 ACC) committed 29 turnovers, resulting in 23 points for the Orange (12-4, 2-1 ACC). Tech was strong on shot-defense holding Syracuse to 29.9 percent from the field on 23-of-77 shooting, including a 21.1 percent (8-of-38) mark from outside. Tech was 14-of-43 (31.1 percent) from the field and 1-of-14 from long range.
“Firstly credit Syracuse,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “They are a very well coached team and play a very good style for their personnel. It’s not like we were surprised by how they play. I’m just disappointed in our team, you’re not going to have any chances in a game when you give up 27 offensive rebounds and turn the ball over 29 times. That being said, credit Syracuse and we have to take this one and try to learn from it.”
Regan Magarity tallied 10 points and seven rebounds to lead the Hokies. Chanette Hicks added nine points and six boards. Sidney Cook tallied seven points for Tech.
The Hokies played strong defense in the opening quarters of the game, holding the Orange to just 27.5 percent from the field, but Tech gave up the ball 15 times resulting in 12 points for ‘Cuse. Tech trailed 20-17 just shy of midway through the second quarter, but the Orange used a late 9-1 run in the second quarter to take a 29-18 lead into the break.
Syracuse extended its lead to 17 (37-20) coming out of the break, but the Hokies looked to answer with a 12-4 run, cutting it to a 10-point game with just over a minute to go in the frame. The Orange led by 11 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Coming out of the quarter break, the Orange went on a 9-2 run to extend its lead to 18 (52-34) after four minutes of play. The Hokies got no closer than 15 the rest of the way as ‘Cuse closed out the game outscoring Tech 8-2.
Alexis Peterson led Syracuse with 16 points and seven assists while Brianna Day tallied 12. Cornelia Fondren grabbed 12 rebounds for the Orange.
Virginia Tech is off in the midweek, but will return to the court on Monday, Jan. 18 to host Clemson. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum and will be broadcast on RSN.
