THE HOKIES (9-7, 0-3 ACC)
Virginia Tech fell to NC State the last time out. Vanessa Panousis led the Hokies with 18 points. Sidney Cook and Rachel Camp tallied 12 points each. Camp and Cook also led on the boards with nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
Tech got out to an early lead, going up 15-7 in the opening six and a half minutes. The Hokies held on to the lead, but NC State kept chipping away and took a 32-25 lead into the break. The Wolfpack increased its lead coming out of the break, but the Hokies kept it close, cutting it down to single-digits several times in the second half. Tech looked to make a late run, trailing by eight with just over four minutes to go, but the Wolfpack answered, outscoring Tech 14-8 in the final minutes to secure the win.
Camp is leading the Hokies on the season, averaging 16.9 points per game and currently ranks eight in the ACC in scoring and is the top freshman in the league. In addition, Camp is pulling down 7.1 rebounds per game, ranking 11th in the league while Taijah Campbell is grabbing 6.9 rpg. Panousis is adding 14.1 points (14th in the ACC) and handing out 3.6 assists per game to rank sixth in the conference. The sophomore guard is also third on the ACC list for three-pointers made, averaging 2.6.
THE HURRICANES (12-3, 2-0 ACC)
Miami upset fourth-ranked Notre Dame, 78-63 at home. Adrienne Motley dropped in 32 points for the Hurricanes while Surya McGuire added 11. Michelle Woods chipped in nine. McGuire and Jassany Williams led the ‘Canes on the boards with eight rebounds each.
The Hurricanes came out firing, shooting 51.7 percent in the first half while holding the Fighting Irish to 24 percent. Miami took a 40-20 lead into the break. Notre Dame outscored Miami in the second half, 43-38, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the difference.
Motley leads Miami with 17.3 points per game, ranking fifth in the ACC. Jessica Thomas is averaging 8.6 ppg and McGuire 8.5 ppg. Williams leads the ‘Canes on the boards with 6.2 rpg.
THE SERIES
Miami leads the series 12-6 and edged the Hokies last season 64-62 in Blacksburg. Top returner for the Hokies is Panousis who tallied 15 points, five rebounds and six assists. Motley had 11 points for the Hurricanes.
Tech trailed by one with 14 seconds to go, but the Hokies were unable to convert on their final shot as the Hurricanes held on for the win.
Up Next: The Hokies take to the road, traveling to Duke on Thursday, Jan. 15 to face the Blue Devils at 6:30 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
