CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson put together a late rally to claim a 63-54 win over the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team in overtime on Friday night at Littlejohn Coliseum in the ACC opener for both teams.
“Extremely disappointing loss,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “I thought the team played hard, but clearly in the last three or four minutes of the game they lost their composure and we turned the ball over so many times it took away our chances of winning.”
Vanessa Panousis tallied 16 points in the game to lead the Hokies (9-5, 0-1 ACC). Taijah Campbell added 14 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds, recording her second double-double of the season and the fourth of her career. Sidney Cook posted the first double-double of her career with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The opening half was back and forth early between the two teams as the Hokies and Tigers were tied up at 12 just past the midway point. Tech broke open the scoring, getting out to a five point, 24-19 lead with 4:34 to go. The Tigers kept it close, but were unable to overcome the Hokies as Tech took a 31-29 lead into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, the Hokies went on a 9-0 run to take their largest lead up 11 after the first three minutes as Campbell connected on a layup. The Tigers got it back within single digits, but the Hokies again surged ahead to take the 46-35 lead with 8:31 to go. Tech maintained the advantage, going up by 10 (48-38) following a jumper from Cook at the 5:58 mark.
The Tigers responded as they forced five Virginia Tech turnovers over the next three minutes while going on a 9-2 run to pull within three at 50-47 with 2:02 to play in the second frame. Rachel Camp scored on the next Tech possession to put the Hokies up again by five, but Clemson went on a 5-0 run to tie it up with 50 seconds remaining. Neither team was able to connect in the final seconds, sending the game into overtime. Clemson dominated the overtime period, outscoring the Hokies 11-2 in the extra minutes to secure the win.
Tech controlled the inside game, pulling down 59 rebounds to Clemson’s 31 and tallying 28 points in the paint. Clemson forced 25 Tech turnovers, resulting in 24 points. Both teams shot around 33 percent from the field, but the Tigers connected on six from outside the arc while the Hokies hit just two long-range shots. Clemson was 15-of-18 from the line while the Hokies were 8-of-11.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday, Jan. 4 when they return to Cassell Coliseum for their ACC home opener, hosting rival Virginia. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
