BLACKSBURG, Va. – Fueled by team-high 23 points from sophomore Vanessa Panousis, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team (9-4) defeated the Hofstra Pride (7-4) 60-43 at Cassell Coliseum on Tuesday evening.
“I am proud of the team,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “I thought Hofstra was a good team coming in; I still think they are a good team. We stayed with our game plan. Playing man-to-man in the first half then changing into the zone in the second we were able to get them out of sorts. I thought our team prepared for this game the right way.”
Just one point shy of tying her career-high, Panousis shot 40 percent from the field and went a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. Freshmen Rachel Camp and Dominique Powell and senior Kelsey Conyers each recorded eight points for the Hokies while sophomore Sidney Cook grabbed a game-high 14 boards. Powell also contributed 10 rebounds.
Both teams got off to a slow start with Hofstra holding a 7-2 lead at the 15:37 mark. The Pride maintained the advantage over the next several minutes before the Hokies tied it up at 12-12, midway through the half. Hofstra again pulled ahead and were on top 17-15, but the Hokies went to work, outscoring the Pride 14-3 over the final 7:30 of the half to take a 28-20 lead into the break.
The Hokies and the Pride exchanged buckets to open up the second half, but Tech began to breakaway after a jumper and three pointer from Panousis as Tech took a 37-24 lead at the 16:06 mark.
Tech extended its lead to 18 after a three from Panousis at the 10:59 mark. Hofstra attempted to lessen its deficit, but the Pride’s effort was thwarted by a stout Hokie defense that never let Hofstra come within less than 14 for the rest of the game.
Tech is back in action on Friday, Jan. 2 when the Hokies open ACC play on the road at Clemson. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Littlejohn Coliseum.
