THE HOKIES (7-4)
Virginia Tech defeated Western Carolina, 79-58 the last time out as freshman Rachel Camp tallied her fourth double-double of the season and third in as many games with 33 points and 11 rebounds. Camp set the single-game freshman scoring record, becoming the first Hokie rookie in program history to top the 30-point mark. She earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors for her performance. Vanessa Panousis added 24 points.
The Hokies got out to the lead early in the opening half and were up by 24 with just over seven minutes to go. WCU went on a run in the final minutes to cut Tech’s halftime lead to 40-27. In the second half, the Hokies maintained the advantage and never allowed the Catamounts within single-digits.
Camp is leading the Hokies on the season, averaging 18.1 points per game and currently ranks fifth in the ACC in scoring and is the top freshman. In addition, Camp is pulling down 7.5 rebounds per game, ranking 11th in the league. Regan Magarity is one of four players in the ACC averaging a double-double with 14.0 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, but has been sidelined the past six games with an injury. Panousis is adding 12.5 points and handing out 4.1 assists per game to rank fourth in the conference.
THE HIGHLANDERS (3-7, 0-2 Big South)
Radford is coming off a 58-52 loss to West Virginia State, marking the first time in 13 years that the Highlanders have fallen to a DII team. Ayana Avery and Jordynn Gaymon led Radford with 12 points each while Aisha Foy added 10. Radford held the slight 26-25 lead at the break, but WV State outscored the Highlanders 33-26 in the second frame to secure the win.
The Hokies are the third ACC team that the Highlanders have played this season. RU opened the season at UVA (L, 75-47) before making the trip 10 days later to Pitt (L, 72-47).
