PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Fueled by double-digit scoring performances from freshmen Rachel Camp and Regan Magarity, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team held off a late Providence surge to secure the 72-69 win on Sunday afternoon in Providence, Rhode Island.
“I am very proud of the team,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “We overcame a lot and fought hard right to the end. With Taijah [Campbell], who is one of our better rebounders, being out I thought that would put us in a little bit of a hole. There are some things we need to clear up still, but I am very happy with the way the team played today particularly the two freshmen.”
Camp dropped in a career-high 22 points, connecting on 6-of-9 from the field and 10-of-14 from the free throw line. Magarity added 17 points, going a perfect 5-of-5 from the field while hitting 7-of-9 from the line. She dropped in 10 straight points in the final three minutes to help secure the win for the Hokies. Sophomore Sidney Cook tallied nine points for the Hokies in her Virginia Tech debut.
Magarity also led the Hokies on the boards with nine rebounds. Camp played an all around solid game, grabbing six rebounds and handing out five assists to go with her points.
Coming out of the break, the Hokies outscored the Friars 13-7 in the opening seven minutes to take a nine point 48-39 lead with 13:03 to go in the second frame. Providence stuck around, keeping it to a single-digit difference, with Hokies up 57-50 heading into the final six minutes of the game.
The Friars scored the next seven, tying it up at 57 with 5:06 to go, but the Hokies again pulled ahead as Camp connected on a pair of free throws. The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes with the Friars leading 62-59 with just under three minutes to go. Magarity went to work, scoring the next 10 points for the Hokies to give Tech a five point, 69-64 lead with 39 seconds remaining.
Providence closed it to 71-69 with 13 seconds to go, but with six seconds showing Camp hit the front side of two from the line. Providence had one chance to tie it up, but the last second heave by the Friars fell short.
In the opening half, Providence got out to the early lead and was up by five after three minutes of play. The Hokies went on a run, outscoring the Friars 18-9 over the next seven minutes to go on top 22-17 with 10:37 to go in the half. Providence kept it close and reclaimed the lead, going up 23-22 two minutes later. The Hokies again answered, this time with a an 8-2 run to take their largest lead of the half, up six (31-25) with just over four minutes to go. Providence made the late push in the half to close it to 33-32 heading into the break.
Overall the Hokies shot well, hitting 51.4 percent from the field on 19-of-37. Tech also connected on 71.4 percent from the line, going 30-of-42. The Hokies held Providence to 38.2 percent from the field while the Friars hit just 47.6 (10-of-21) from the free throw line.
The two teams were close on rebounding with Tech grabbing 38 to the Friars’ 37, but Providence grabbed 19 offensive boards for 20 second chance points. The Friars also forced 25 turnovers for 30 points. Tech controlled the paint however, outscoring the Friars 28-18 inside.
Three players tallied 15 points for the Friars (1-3) as Alexis Harris, Allegra Botteghi and Sarah Beal all reached the mark. Tori Rule added 14 points. Harris also led the Friars on the boards with 11 rebounds.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Tuesday, Nov. 25 when they return to Cassell Coliseum to host Old Dominion. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
