BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team returns to Cassell Coliseum to host Maryland Eastern Shore in the Hokies' home opener on Sunday, Nov. 16. Game time is set for noon.

THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech looks to bounce back after George Mason held off the Hokies 77-69 in the season opener for both teams. Regan Magarity dropped in 25 points, becoming the first freshman in program history to tally 25 or more in their collegiate debut. Magarity also tallied seven rebounds, three assists and a block.

Taijah Campbell added 14 points and Vanessa Panousis tallied 11. Kelsey Conyers dished out a career-high six assists.

The Hokies trailed by just three at halftime, but Mason took a 10 point lead late in the game. Tech cut it to a one point difference (62-61) with 3:03 to go, but the Patriots were able to hold on, connecting on 8-of-8 from the line in the final minutes to help stop the Tech rally.

THE HAWKS
UMES faced Georgetown in its season-opener, falling to the Hoyas 88-75. Five players hit double-digits for the Hawks with Jessica Long leading the way with 15 points. Shawnee Sweeney and Moengaroa Subritzky added 13 each. Alexis Udoji posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while also recording six blocks. Mariah McCoy also chipped in 10 points.

Last season the Hawks went 9-21 overall and 4-12 in the MEAC. The team returns 10 players and added three newcomers for 2014-15. UMES was picked to finish ninth (out of 13) in the preseason conference poll and Udoji was named to the preseason Third Team All-Conference team.

THE SERIES
This marks the first meeting between Virginia Tech and Maryland Eastern Shore in women’s basketball.

The Hokies hold a 19-4 record all-time over teams from the MEAC, but fell to eventual MEAC CHampion Hampton last season on the road 70-60. Former Hokies Uju Ugoka and Monet Tellier led the team in that game with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Virginia Tech’s men’s team has faced UMES six times, winning all meetings including a 71-46 decision over the Hawks to open the 2014-15 season.

Up Next: The Hokies remain at home to host Norfolk State on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
