Ugoka tries to become fifth Hokie drafted in the WNBA

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech senior forward Uju Ugoka will travel to Nashville, Tenn. next week to participate in the 2014 WNBA Combine in preparation for the 2014 WNBA Draft in April.

Ugoka, a 6-foot-1 forward from Lagos, Nigeria, led the Hokies all season, averaging 18.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, earning All-ACC Second Team honors in both the Blue Ribbon Panel and Coaches’ vote. In addition, Ugoka was tabbed to the All-Academic team for her performance, both on and off the court.

She finished the season ranked eighth in the league in scoring and third in rebounding. This season, Ugoka set a Virginia Tech single-season record with 16 double-doubles and tied the longest streak in program history with six in a row. She also has the 17th-most double-doubles in the NCAA this year. In addition, Ugoka set the Tech single-season field goals made record with 213, breaking the previous record of 212 set by Renee Dennis during the 1986-87 season.

The Hokies have had four players drafted in the WNBA, beginning with Tere Williams in 2001. Ieva Kublina (2004), Kerri Gardin (2006) and Nare Diawara (2007) were also drafted.

The combine is invitation only to give the top college seniors an opportunity to be evaluated by WNBA coaches and other staff members before the draft. Complete combine rosters will be released on April 2.
