COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to No. 9/7 Maryland, 87-48 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2013-14 regular season. Tech will await the conclusion of all of today’s games to learn its seed for the ACC Tournament beginning on Wednesday, March 5.
Vanessa Panousis and Taijah Campbell tallied seven points each for the Hokies (14-15, 4-15 ACC). Campbell also grabbed five rebounds, while Serafina Maulupe and Maddison Penn added six points each.
Both teams got off to a slow start early in the half, with the Terps holding a 7-4 lead after the first four minutes of play. Maryland broke the scoring open, going on a 13-0 run as the Hokies went scoreless for a nine-minute span. Maddison Penn broke the drought with a three-pointer at 7:34, but the Terps held a 20-7 advantage. Maryland outscored the Hokies 20-8 in the final minutes of the half to take a 38-15 lead in to the break.
The Hokies shot better from the field in the second half, connecting on 54.5 percent from the field after hitting just 17.6 percent in the opening period. However, the Terrapins were able to maintain the advantage, outscoring Tech 49-33 in the second frame.
“We got off to a bad start shooting in this game,” said Head Coach Dennis Wolff. “We were never really able to get ourselves back on track after digging as deep of a hole as we did.”
Maryland used its size advantage to outrebound the Hokies, 45-22. Tech finished the game with a 32.1 percent clip from the field, while the Terrapins connected on 56.9 percent. The Hokies held the advantage from outside the arc, hitting nine three pointers to the Terps’ five. Maryland also hit 16-of-26 from the free throw line, while Tech went 3-of-6.
Alyssa Thomas led the Terps (24-5, 12-4 ACC) with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Brene Mosely added 13 points and Tierney Pfirman chipped in 11 points.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Wednesday, March 5 in the opening round of the ACC Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.
