BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team will host Clemson on Thursday, Feb. 27 in the final home game of the 2013-14 season. Tech will recognize seniors Monet Tellier, Uju Ugoka, Nia Evans, Porschia Hadley and senior manager Morgan Allen prior to the game. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.

The Hokies
The last time out, the Hokies knocked off No. 11/8 North Carolina, 50-47, on Feb. 23 for Tech’s first win in Chapel Hill.

The Hokies came out strong and led by as many as 12 (19-7) in the opening half. Carolina answered with a 12-0 run to tie it up with 6:35 to go in the half. The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes, but the Hokies took the 25-24 lead in to the break. Tech again got out early in the half, going up by six several times in the opening minutes and led by as many (36-30) with just over 12 minutes to play. The Tar Heels again responded, going on a 13-1 run to take its largest lead of the game at 43-37 with 6:55 remaining. Tech rallied with a 9-0 run as the Hokies reclaimed the lead. UNC cut it to a one point game going in to the final minute, but Vanessa Panousis went 4-of-4 from the line to secure the win.

Panousis led the Hokies with 24 points and handed out three assists, setting a new Virginia Tech freshman assist record. She broke the previous record of 106 set by Carrie Mason during the 2002-03 season. Uju Ugoka added 13 points for the Hokies while Monet Tellier grabbed 12 rebounds.

Ugoka leads Tech on the year, averaging 18.7 points and 9.8 rebounds. She is fourth in the conference in scoring and third in rebounding. Panousis is notching 12.9 points and chipping in 4.07 assists. Tellier is adding 10.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

The Tigers
Clemson fell to Florida State, 59-43 on Sunday, Feb. 23 at Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson, S.C.

Florida State used a dominate performance on the boards to help secure the win, out rebounding the Tigers, 56-25, including 30 on the offensive glass, resulting in 25 second-chance points. Clemson kept it close though in the first half and only trailed by seven at the break, but FSU out scored CU 29-20 in the second frame to seal the win.

Quinyotta Pettaway led the Tigers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Kelly Gramlich added 11 points, connecting on a trio of baskets from outside the arc.

Nikki Dixon leads Clemson on the season with 13.4 points per game. Pettaway is adding 10.1 ppg and grabbing a team-best 6.4 rebounds per game. Chelsea Lindsay has handed out 110 assists this season.

The Series
Clemson holds the slight 8-7 edge in the all-time series and has won the last three meetings between the two teams. Last season in Blacksburg, Clemson defeated the Hokies 47-37 on Jan. 31, 2013. Tellier had 14 points for Tech and Ugoka grabbed 14 rebounds. Pettaway led the Tigers with 14 points while Gramlich posted 11.

Tech’s last win over Clemson was on Jan. 2, 2012 when the Hokies claimed the 55-33 decision at Littlejohn Colisem.

Up Next: The Hokies will wrap up the regular season at No. 9/7 Maryland on Sunday, March 2. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md.
