Hokies wrap up home stand hosting Georgia Tech
Women's basketball faces Yellow Jackets on Thursday at 7 p.m.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team will wrap up its home stand on Thursday, Jan. 23 when the Hokies host Georgia Tech. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.

The Hokies
In the Hokies last game, No. 3/3 Duke held off the rally to edge Virginia Tech, 74-70 Jan. 19 at Cassell Coliseum.

The Hokies fell behind in the first half and trailed the Blue Devils, 38-23 at the break. In the second half, Duke kept the advantage early and were up by 15 (45-30) with 16 minutes to go. The Hokies responded with a 15-3 run, sparked by four straight points from Monet Tellier, to cut the Duke advantage to 48-45 with just under 11 minutes on the clock. The Blue Devils again extended their advantage to double-digits and were up by 10 (70-60) with 47 seconds to play. Uju Ugoka went to work and went on a personal 8-1 run over the next 30 seconds to again pull the Hokies within three with 14 seconds remaining. However, the Blue Devils were able to connect on 3-of-4 from the line in the final seconds to hold on for the win.

Ugoka led the Hokies’ offense on the day with 29 points and 11 rebounds to record her ninth double-double of the season. Vanessa Panousis added 21 points, shooting 7-of-15 from the field, including 5-of-8 from outside the arc. Tellier recorded 18 points and handed out five assists in the game.

Ugoka leads Tech on the season, averaging 19.9 points and 10.4 rebounds. The senior is one of three players in the Atlantic Coast Conference currently averaging a double-double. She is second in the conference in scoring and third in rebounding. Panousis is adding 11.8 points and chipping in 4.6 assists, while Tellier is averaging 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists.

The Yellow Jackets
Georgia Tech fell to No. 6 Maryland, 92-81, the last time out on Sunday, Jan. 19 in College Park, Md.

Three players tallied double-digits for the Yellow Jackets, with Kaela Davis leading the way with 27 points. Tyaunna Marshall added 22 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and tallied four steals against the Terps. Nariah Taylor came in off the bench for 11 points and six rebounds.

Davis leads the Yellow Jackets on the season with 18.6 points per game, while Marshall is adding 18.2 points and pulling down 8.0 rebounds. Sydney Wallace is tallying 8.6 ppg and Dawnn Maye is handing out 3.4 assists per game on the season.

The Series
Georgia Tech holds the slight 6-5 lead in the all-time series, but the Hokies claimed a 63-61 win last season in Atlanta on February 8, 2013. Monet Tellier dropped in 24 points for the Hokies in the win. Former Tech players Aerial Wilson and Alyssa Fenyn added 11 and 10, respectively. Marshall notched 15 points for the Yellow Jackets and Maye added 14.

The last time the two teams met in Blacksburg was on Feb. 23, 2012, when Georgia Tech picked up a 76-66 win.

Up Next: The Hokies will return to the road, traveling to Tallahassee, Fla. to face Florida State on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. in the Tucker Center.
