RADFORD, Va. – Senior Uju Ugoka dropped in 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team past local rival Radford, 82-33 on Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va.
The Hokies enter the holiday break at 9-2 while the Highlanders fall to 2-9.
“I give our girls a lot of credit for playing extremely hard right from the beginning,” said Head Coach Dennis Wolff. “As you head in to Christmas it’s not always easy and I think the kids really didn’t let getting to Christmas get in the way of playing a good game, so I’m proud of them for that.”
Ugoka connected on 9-of-13 from the field and 4-of-5 from the line en route to recording her 22 points and a career-high tying 17 rebounds in just 22 minutes of play. It marks her sixth consecutive double-double of the season as Ugoka joins Karen Garbis as the only other Tech player to record six straight. Garbis accomplished the feat in 1978.
Freshman Maddison Penn hit a new career-high with 15 points, hitting 5-of-8 from outside the arc. Vanessa Panousis added 12 points and handed out five assists. Taijah Campbell grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Hokies took control early in the first half, opening with a 13-6 run to lead by as much with 15:15 on the clock. Tech held the Highlanders scoreless over the next six minutes as the Hokies extended their lead, going up 26-6 off a layup from Ugoka with 10:42 to play. The Hokies took their largest lead of the half, going up 45-12 in the final minute as Penn drained a three pointer. Radford’s Jordynn Gaymon hit a layup in the final 10 seconds, but the Hokies took a 45-14 lead in to the break.
Virginia Tech continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring the Highlanders 37-19 in the second 20 minutes of play. The Hokies held their largest lead, going on top by 51 points with 3:13 to play off a free throw from Lauren Evans.
Tech shot 41.2 (28-68) percent from the field while hitting 40 (10-25) percent from outside the arc. The Hokies also shot well from the line, hitting 76.2 percent on 16-of-21. Tech controlled the boards, pulling down 58 rebounds, including 22 on the offensive glass for 18 second-chance points. Virginia Tech forced 21 turnovers by the Highlanders for 29 points.
The last time Tech scored 80 or more points in a true away game was on Nov. 26, 2005 when the Hokies defeated Southern Methodist, 87-61. Virginia Tech had 84 against Texas San Antonio in a neutral site game on Dec. 20, 2007.
The Hokies will take a few days off for the holidays before getting back in action on Sunday, Dec. 29 when they host Robert Morris. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
