BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team will open the 2013-14 season on Saturday, Nov. 9 when the Hokies host Howard at 3 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.

The Hokies
Virginia Tech returns four of its top five scorers from last season. Monet Tellier led the team with 13.2 points per game while averaging 5.6 rebounds per game and handing out a team-high 96 assists. Uju Ugoka added 12.5 ppg and pulled down a team-best 8.5 rpg. Taijah Campbell and Lauren Evans both added 4.7 ppg during the 2012-13 campaign.
Last season, Tellier joined the Virginia Tech 1,000 point club, knocking down the milestone setting basket in Tech’s win over then-No. 19 Florida State. She posted 24 points in the game, becoming just the eighth Virginia Tech women’s basketball player to top the 1,000 point mark as a junior and the 23rd overall.
Virginia Tech added five newcomers to the team for this season as Serafina Maulupe, Vanessa Panousis, Maddison Penn, Samantha Hill and Tara Nahodil suit up for the Hokies in 2013-14. Panousis, Penn and Hill were busy over the summer before arriving in Blacksburg as the three represented their respective countries on the international stage. Panousis and Penn were members of the Australian U19 team at the FIBA World Championships while Hill represented team Canada at the same event. Campbell also represented Canada over the summer, competing in the World University Games.
The Bison
Howard was picked to finish fifth in the MEAC preseason poll after posting a 20-12 overall record and 14-5 in the league last season.
The Bison lost its the top-four leading scorers from last season, including top scorer Saadia Doyle, an All-MEAC First Team selection, who averaged 20.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game during her senior campaign. Howard returns four players from last year’s squad.
Howard is under the direction of first-year head coach Tennille Adams who takes over the Bison program after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at Northwestern.
The Series
This marks the fourth meeting between the two teams with the Hokies holding a perfect 3-0 record against the Bison. The two teams last met during the 2006-07 season in a neutral site game in Baton Rouge, La. Tech claimed the 97-78 win over the Bison as former Hokie Nare Diawara led the team with 24 points and nine rebounds.
Up Next: The Hokies will take to the road for their second game of the season, traveling to Old Dominion on Monday, Nov. 11 for a 7 p.m. game in the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va.
