WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior Alyssa Fenyn led the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team on Thursday evening as the Hokies topped ACC foe Wake Forest, 62-52 at LJVM Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Fenyn tallied 16 points, connecting on 6-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-4 from outside the arc to lead the Hokies (10-18, 4-13 ACC) past the Demon Deacons. The guard also grabbed five rebounds, handed out five assists and picked up two steals.
Monet Tellier added 14 points for Tech, while pulling down eight rebounds and passing out a game-best six assists. Uju Ugoka recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Aerial Wilson added nine points.
“Really proud of the team,” said Virginia Tech head coach Dennis Wolff. “It was a great, great game for both Aerial and Alyssa. They are in their last week of regular season games as Hokies and for them to get back-to-back wins going into their senior day is a great thing. I thought the team played very hard and very well for long stretches of the game tonight.”
Chelsea Douglas led the Demon Deacons (12-17, 5-12 ACC) with 18 points. Sandra Garcia added a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Hokies got out to an early lead in the first half, going up by eight (12-4) after the first five minutes of play. Wake Forest cut it down to five, but Tech took its largest lead of the half at the 8:11 mark, up 16-7 following a jumper from Tellier. The Demon Deacons again looked to make a run as they cut the lead down to four several times in the final minutes and trailed 22-18 with 1:42 to go. Virginia Tech closed out the half with a 4-0 run to take an eight point, 26-18 lead in to the break.
Coming out of the break, the Deacs cut it down to five, 26-21, at the 18-minute mark, but the Hokies answered with a 13-2 run to go on top 39-23 with just over 11 minutes to go. Virginia Tech maintained its double-digit lead and was up by 16 (44-28) with 8:48 remaining, but the Deacs responded with an 8-0 run, cutting the gap to 44-36 at the 6:03 mark.
The Hokies again extended their lead and was up by 14 (56-42) with just under two minutes to play. Wake Forest looked to make a late run, pulling within eight (58-50) with under a minute remaining, but Tech hit 4-of-6 from the free throw line in the final seconds to secure the win.
Virginia Tech connected on 24-of-55 (43.6 percent) from the field including a 50 percent (4-of-8) clip from outside the arc. The Demon Deacons hit 31 percent (18-of-58) and was 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from three-point range.
The Hokies held a slight advantage on the boards, pulling down 40 to Wake’s 38. Virginia Tech forced 20 turnovers for 14 points.
Virginia Tech will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, March 3 when the Hokies host Miami at 2 p.m. It will mark senior day at Cassell Coliseum when Tech recognizes seniors Fenyn, Wilson, Kerry Sarver and Rachel Nichols.
