BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to No. 16/17 North Carolina, 72-50 on Friday evening in ACC action at Cassell Coliseum.
Monet Tellier led the Hokies (8-18, 2-13 ACC) with 15 points while handing out eight assists. Alexis Lloyd recorded a new career-high with 11 points on 4-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-4 from outside. Uju Ugoka added 10 points and Alyssa Fenyn tallied seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.
"The girls played hard," said Virginia Tech head coach Dennis Wolff. "We played really well as a team and if we had made some more of our layups in the first half it could have been a six or eight point game at the break. I really liked the way that Alexis and Monet played tonight. Alexis was able to get her feet set and hit some threes and Monet played tough throughout the game."
Tierra Ruffin-Pratt dropped in 17 points for the Tar Heels (24-4, 12-3 ACC). Xylina McDaniel recorded 13 points for Carolina and Krista Gross added 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
The Hokies and Tar Heels kept it close early with Tech trailing by three (10-7) at the 14:47 mark after a three pointer from Lloyd. Carolina answered with a 24-4 run to take its largest lead of the half, up 34-13 with just over four minutes to go. Tech responded, outscoring the Tar Heels 11-1 over the next three minutes to cut the deficit down to 13 (35-22) with 1:22 on the clock. The two teams traded baskets in the final minutes as UNC took a 40-24 lead into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, the Tar Heels extended their lead and was up by 22 (53-31) with just over 13 minutes to go. Tech answered with a 9-2 run off three consecutive three pointers to cut the Carolina lead down to 15 with 10:45 on the clock. The Hokies would again look to make a run, getting within 14 at 8:59 off a three from Tellier, but that is as close as Tech would get as Carolina closed out the game for the win.
Virginia Tech shot 19-of-56 (33.9 percent) from the field and knocked down 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from three-point range. The Tar Heels connected on 24-of-58 (41.4 percent) from the field, including 9-of-17 from outside the arc. Tech struggled from the free throw line hitting just 35.7 percent on 5-of-14. Carolina hit 15-of-25 from the stripe.
The Tar Heels pulled down 41 rebounds to Tech’s 35, but both teams grabbed 11 offensive boards for seven points each. Carolina scored 12 points off 14 Tech turnovers while the Hokies posted six after forcing 10 UNC turnovers.
Virginia Tech will return to the court on Sunday, Feb. 24 when the team hosts No. 19/20 Florida State. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
