BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to No. 5/4 Duke, 77-33, on Thursday evening in an ACC match up at Cassell Coliseum.
“I think what we had was a good team playing good, and a team that’s trying to find itself helping to contribute to that by making a lot of the plays that we made,” said Virginia Tech head coach Dennis Wolff. "Our team has played better in the past two weeks, in the past two games than what we did tonight.”
Alyssa Fenyn led the Hokies (8-16, 2-11 ACC) with seven points. Lauren Evans added six points. Aerial Wilson grabbed a team-best five rebounds and Alexis Lloyd handed out three assists.
Haley Peters recorded a double-double for the Blue Devils (23-1, 13-0 ACC) with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Elizabeth Williams added 25 points and seven boards. Chelsea Gray dished out seven assists.
Duke got out to a quick 14-2 lead after four minutes of play. The Hokies got the difference down to nine two possessions later, trailing 14-5 at the 15 minute mark. The Blue Devils answered with five straight points to go up 19-5. Tech would get no closer than 12 in the rest of the opening half as the Blue Devils took a 40-14 lead into the break.
The Blue Devils continued their run in to the second half and took their largest lead of the game up 46 with just under three minutes remaining. Duke claimed the win with a final score of 77-33.
Virginia Tech shot 15-of-54 from the field, connecting on 27.8 percent. The Blue Devils knocked down 46.3 percent on 25-of-54 from the field including 7-of-15 from outside the arc. Duke also hit 20-of-24 (83.3 percent) from the free throw line while Tech was 1-of-4.
Duke forced 23 Virginia Tech turnovers to score 20 points. The Hokies forced 18 Duke turnovers, resulting in 11 points. The Blue Devils also held the advantage on the boards, pulling down 44 to Tech’s 25.
The Hokies will be back on the court when they travel to Clemson, S.C. to face the Tigers. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17 at Littlejohn Coliseum.
