GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team battled until the end, but Wake Forest held off the Hokies to claim the 80-74 win on Thursday night in the opening round of the 2012 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum.
“We’re very sorry that the season is over,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “I couldn’t be any more proud of a group of kids. They literally played to the last possession of the season, so I think that bodes well for their character and how we are going to try to run the program going forward.”
Tech (7-23, 3-13 ACC) was led by Monet Tellier's 23 points, with 16 of those coming in the second half. Aerial Wilson added 20 points and Nia Evans came off the bench for 12 points and recorded three steals. LaTorri Hines-Allen grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and Alyssa Fenyn handed out a game-best five assists.
Tellier’s scoring performance marks the most points by a Virginia Tech player in an ACC tournament game, eclipsing the 21 points scored by Utahya Drye against Virginia in 2009.
The Demon Deacons (18-12, 7-9 ACC) were led by Lakevia Boykin with 22 points. Chelsea Douglas added 21 and Secily Ray connected for 17. Ray also pulled down seven rebounds.
Coming out of halftime, the two teams traded baskets early before Wake extended its lead to seven, up 47-40 after six minutes of play. The Hokies tied it up at 47 just shy of the midway point of the half, but the Deacs responded with a 16-4 run to go up 61-49 with 6:33 to go.
Wake Forest maintained the lead and held its largest of the game with just under three to go, on top 71-56. The Hokies never gave up as they answered with a 16-5 run, pulling within four (76-72) with 30 seconds to go. Wake connected on 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the final seconds to hold off the Hokies.
Tech had its best shooting performance of the season, connecting on 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the field. The Hokies held a 35 to 28 advantage on the boards and had 10 second-chance points. Tech’s 74 points is the third highest point performance by the Hokies this season. The team had 77 at Old Dominion and 75 at Maryland.
