WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team dropped its final regular season game on Sunday afternoon, falling to Wake Forest, 68-39 at the LJVM Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C.
“Disappointing in that when we face any adversity, collectively we still seem to crumble,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “Our lack of confidence in our shooting coupled with defensive breakdowns got us into a huge hole that we couldn’t get out of.”
The Hokies (7-22, 3-13 ACC) were led by Alyssa Fenyn with 14 points and five rebounds. Monet Tellier had 11 points and Larryqua Hall added a career-high 10 points and notched five rebounds.
Wake Forest’s (17-12, 7-9 ACC) Secily Ray and Lindsy Wright each recorded double-doubles. Ray and 10 points and 16 rebounds while Wright notched 12 points and 11 boards. Chelsea Douglas led all scorers with 15 points and Lakevia Boykin had 14.
Both teams got off to a slow start and were tied at two at the first media timeout. Wake quickly answered with a 20-2 run, taking a 22-4 lead at the 7:58 mark. The Demon Deacons maintained their advantage throughout the opening half and held a 24-point, 41-17 lead going into the break.
Wake continued their run into the second half and led 48-20 in the opening six minutes of the half. Tech got the score down to a 19-point (54-35) difference with 8:42 on the clock but would get no closer as Wake claimed the win.
The Demon Deacons held the 47-33 advantage on the boards, resulting in 17 second-chance points to the Hokies’ eight. Wake also had 21 points off of 17 Tech turnovers while the Hokies scored nine points after forcing 13 WFU turnovers.
Tech will have the chance to avenge their loss to the Demon Deacons as the two are slated to meet in the opening round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday, March 1.
