BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team overcame an 18 point second half deficit, pulling within seven, but No. 17/19 Georgia Tech held off the Hokies for a 76-66 ACC win on Thursday evening at Cassell Coliseum.

“My feelings are dramatically different than they were Sunday after the Virginia game,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “I thought we had good effort and followed the game plan. I’m proud of these kids tonight. All year they’ve been a resilient bunch and they really showed tonight that they keep playing until the end.”

Leading the Hokies (7-21, 3-12 ACC) was Aerial Wilson with 21 points. Alyssa Fenyn added 13 points while Monet Tellier notched 12. Porschia Hadley put in 11 points. Fenyn, Wilson and Tellier each recorded three steals and LaTorri Hines-Allen pulled down six rebounds.

Virginia Tech had its best night from the field this season, shooting 46.2 percent on 24-of-52. Georgia Tech shot 55.3 percent, hitting 26-of-47.

The Yellow Jackets (21-7, 11-4 ACC) were led by Sasha Goodlett with 18 points and eight rebounds. Metra Walthour added 14 points and Sydney Wallace had nine.

The Hokies and the Yellow Jackets kept it close in the opening minutes of the game and were tied at 15 with 12:19 remaining in the first half before Georgia Tech opened up the scoring to take a 24-17 lead six minutes later. The Hokies cut the gap down to three (24-21) off a Wilson jumper with just over five minutes to go, but the Yellow Jackets answered with a 16-4 run to close out the half and take a 40-24 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Yellow Jackets took their largest lead, up 46-28 after two minutes. Virginia Tech chiseled away at the lead, going on a 14-5 run to cut it down to nine (51-42) with 13:16 on the clock. Georgia Tech went back up by 11, but baskets on back-to-back possessions put the Hokies within seven midway through the half as they trailed 55-48.

Georgia Tech pushed their lead to 11 and held a 66-55 advantage with 4:23 to go, but a pair of free throws followed by a jumper from Wilson put the Hokies back within seven with 2:37 showing. The Yellow Jackets went on an 8-1 run to extend their lead to 14 with just over a minute to go. The Hokies outscored Georgia Tech 6-2 in the final minute, but the Yellow Jackets held on for the win.

Georgia Tech held the 35-24 advantage on the boards, but only had nine second-chance points while the Hokies recorded five. The Hokies were impressive inside, pouring in 34 points in the paint while Georgia Tech had 24. Defensively, the Hokies recorded 13 steals and forced 18 turnovers.

The Hokies will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 26 at Wake Forest. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
