COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The 15th-ranked Maryland Terrapins used long-range shooting in the second half to fight back a valiant defensive effort by Virginia Tech and defeat the Hokies, 61-48, Thursday evening at the Comcast Center. Maryland improved to 22-6 overall and 8-5 in the ACC, while Tech fell to 11-17 and 1-12 in the conference.
After trailing 29-22 at the half, Tech used an 11-4 run to tie the game at 33-33 on a Shanel Harrison (Jr., Washington, D.C.) jumper at the 12:41 mark. Maryland responded with a 7-0 spurt which concluded on a Laurin Mincy three-point basket. Mincy, a freshman who only had 10 treys on the year, finished with four in the game which was part of seven on the night for the Terps from behind the arc.
Tech made one final push over the next minute to draw within four, 41-37, but Maryland put the game away with a 19-7 run build its largest lead, 60-44, and went on the victory.
Brittany Gordon led Tech with 11 points and 10 rebounds for her seventh career double-double and Harrison was the only other Hokie in double figures with 11 points.
Maryland was led by Alyssa Thomas with 15 points followed by Mincy’s 12 and Lynetta Kizer added 11 points. Kizer added a game-high 12 boards for her ninth double-double of the year.
Tech more than held its own with the Terps who entered the game second in the nation with a 14.0 rebound margin only to see the Hokies win the battle of the boards, 35-33, including a 15-10 advantage on the offensive glass.
Free throw shooting again hurt Tech as the Hokies struggled to make only 11-of-21 from the line. Tech also suffered 19 turnovers, but was able to force Maryland into 18 miscues.
The Hokies return to action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum when they play host to arch-rival Virginia. Tech seniors Nikki Davis (Lexington, Ky.), Elizabeth Basham (Abingdon, Va.) and Gordon will be recognized before the game. The contest will also be televised by the Regional Sport Network.
