DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 7 Duke Blue Devils used a 22-0 run in the first half and never looked back to defeat Virginia Tech, 90-40, Sunday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tech dropped its second straight to fall to 11-16 overall and 1-11 in the ACC, while Duke improved to 24-3 and 10-2 in the conference.
A layup by Brittany Gordon (Sr., Howard County, Md.) tied the game at 7-7 with 15:27 remaining in the first half. The Tech basket was to be the Hokies’ last for the next 8:06 as a three-point bucket by Jasmine Thomas ignited the Blue Devils 22-0 run. A jumper by Tech reserve Elizabeth Basham (Sr., Abingdon, Va.) finally stopped the run with 7:23 left in the half. The Hokies suffered 10 turnovers against the Blue Devils press and were 0-for-8 from the field. Duke later extended the lead to as many as 28 points, before settling for a 45-19 halftime advantage.
The second half was much of the same as the Hokies could get no closer than 22 points the rest of way against the Duke press which remained in effect for much of the second half. The Hokies committed a season-high 32 turnovers which led to 32 Duke points and the Blue Devils controlled the boards, 49-24, including 26 on the offensive glass.
“We expected Duke to press since they do it every single game,” said Tech head coach Beth Dunkenberger. “We only had one day to prepare for it and obviously they were pretty good at it. Coming off a 22-point loss at Maryland, I’m sure they’ve had some talking to and a discussion about their energy and they took it to another level on the defensive end.”
The 50-point loss was the largest for Tech in an ACC game eclipsing at 42-point defeat at the hands of the Blue Devils (93-51) on Feb. 22, 2006.
Gordon was the only Hokie in double figures with 10 points and also led Tech with five rebounds.
Thomas led three Duke players in double figures with 27 points followed by Tricia Liston and Karima Christmas with 19 and 12 points, respectively. Krystal Thomas pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds.
The Hokies will return to action on Thurs., Feb. 24 at Maryland in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
