HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech controlled James Madison for 30 minutes Sunday afternoon but the Dukes, behind 27 points from Dawn Evans, closed the game on a 24-7 run to defeat the Hokies, 66-59, in front of 2,213 in the JMU Convocation Center. James Madison improved to 2-0 with the win and snapped Tech’s nine-game winning streak in the series. The Hokies fell to 2-2 on the year.
Utahya Drye (Sr., Durham, N.C.) hit a jumper with 8:07 remaining in the game to give the Hokies a 52-42 lead. From that point on, the Dukes took control and finally caught Tech at 56 with just under three minutes to go. JMU, which briefly led by a single point in the first half, took the lead for good on an Evans layup. Alyssa Fenyn (Fr., Newark, N.Y.) made one of two free throws to narrow the gap to 58-57. However, the Dukes scored eight of the final ten points for the final margin.
Shanel Harrison (So., Washington, D.C.) came off the bench to lead Tech with 14 points and eight rebounds. Fenyn scored 12 points followed by Lindsay Biggs (Sr., Midlothian, Va.) with 11 points, including three treys. In addition to Harrison and Fenyn’s production, the Hokies got six points from Abby Redick (Fr., Roanoke, Va.) and four from Porschia Hadley (Fr., Montezuma, Ga.).
On the day, Tech freshmen and sophomores contributed 36 points, however starters Drye, Brittany Gordon (Jr., Howard County, Md.) and Nikki Davis (Jr., Lexington, Ky.) were limited to only a combined 12 points. The Hokies bench outscored JMU, 24-15.
In addition to Evans, who was 9-of-28 from the field including 5-of-12 from behind the arc, the Dukes got 12 points from Kiara Francisco while Tarik Hislop added 11.
Both teams struggled from the field as the Hokies shot only 34.9 percent (22-63) while James Madison was only slightly better connecting on only 37.1% (23-62). Tech narrowly won the battle of the boards, 48-44, and each team committed 14 turnovers in the tight affair.
The Hokies return to action on Wed., Nov. 25 when they travel to face New River rival Radford in a 3 p.m. contest
