RICHCMOND, Va. -- Virginia Tech took great care of the basketball in the season-opening, 77-55, win against Longwood committing only 13 turnovers. However, Monday night’s game at Virginia Commonwealth was the complete opposite as the Hokies committed 24 turnovers in a 72-58 defeat at Verizon Wireless Arena. The season opening victory was the school record 19th consecutive home win for the Rams, while Tech fell to 1-1 on the young season.

The teams battled evenly though the first nine minutes with VCU leading by as many as five points only to see Tech tie the game at 20-20 at the 10:39 mark on a layup by Abby Redick (Fr., Roanoke, Va.). Little did the Hokies know that they would only connect on one more field goal for the remainder of the half. During the drought, the Tech offense committed 10 turnovers and was only 1-of-8 from the field. Fortunately for the Hokies, the Rams also had scoring difficulties and led only 30-24 at the intermission.

Starters Utahye Drye (Sr., Durham, N.C.) and Lindsay Biggs (Sr., Midlothian, Va.) found themselves in early foul trouble and Drye managed only three points while Biggs was held scoreless. Another starter, Nikki Davis (Jr., Lexington, Ky.) was limited to only two points in the opening frame.

While only down by six, the Hokies quickly found themselves in a deep hole in the second half as the Rams exploded out of the locker room and produced a 13-2 run to build their biggest lead of the night at 43-26. Tech made a run at the Rams midway through the half and closed to within six, 50-44, on a Shanel Harrison (So., Washington, D.C.) layup with 8:32 remaining.

VCU’s La’Tavia Rorie nailed a trey to stop the Hokie surge and Tech never drew closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Drye led Tech with 14 points followed by Alyssa Fenyn (Fr., Newark, N.Y.) with 13 points. Junior Brittany Gordon (Howard County, Md.) led the board work with eight rebounds.

The Rams placed five players in double figures led by Courtney Hurt with 16 points. Jennifer Lane and Stephanie Solomon scored 11 points each followed by Ebony Patterson and Rorie with 10 points. Solomon had a game-high 10 rebounds.

VCU connected on 6-of-18 three-points attempts while Tech was 0-of-8 from behind the arc.

The Hokies return to action on Thurs., Nov. 19 when they host George Mason at 7 p.m.
