COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Despite outstanding performances by Lindsay Biggs and Utahya Drye, No. 12 Maryland used a one-two combo of its’ own to defeat Virginia Tech, 96-79, Sunday afternoon at the Comcast Center. The Terrapins improved to 15-3, 3-1, on the year while the Hokies suffered their fourth straight loss to fall to 8-9, 0-4.
The high-octane offensive affair featured some outstanding individual performances by both teams. Biggs (So., Midlothian, Va.) scored a career-high 25 points and connected on a career-best seven three-point baskets. The seven treys is the most by a Hokie in an ACC game and fell one shy of tying the all-time single-game record held by Jeni Garber against South Carolina on Feb. 16, 1991.
Not to be outdone by her teammate, Drye (Jr., Durham, N.C.) bounced back from a season-low four points against No. 4/10 Duke on Friday to match her career-high with 20 points. She also led Tech with nine rebounds tying a season high. Laura Haskins (Sr., Alexandria, Va.) and Nikki Davis (tr-So., Lexington, Ky.) were the other Tech players in double figures with 10 points each. The Tech guards also handed out seven and six assists respectively.
Maryland’s Kristi Toliver tied the Terrapin record for three-point field goals made in a game with eight en route to a 29-point performance to lead five players in double figures. Marissa Coleman chipped in with 21 followed by Anjale’ Barrett’s 14 and 12 each by Demauria Liles and Lynetta Kizer. Liles and Kizer each collected 12 boards for their fifth and sixth double-doubles respectively on the year.
The 9-of-20 team performance set new Tech standards for both three-point field goals made and attempted in an ACC contest. The 48 combined three-point attempts were the most in the history of the Virginia Tech program besting the 45 attempts in the previously mentioned South Carolina contest. Maryland’s 28 attempts from behind the arc also set the all-time record for most attempts by a Hokies opponent.
The first half set the tone for the entire contest as both teams played up tempo basketball. A Haskins jumper at the 7:20 mark pulled Tech to within 32-29 before the Terps put together an 8-0 run and eventually built a 46-38 halftime advantage.
Maryland opened the second half on an 11-3 spurt started by a Toliver trey. The Hokies got as close as 62-51 with just under 15 minutes remaining, but could draw no closer the rest of the way. The Terps built their lead to a game-high 24 points, 87-63, and cruised to the victory.
The Hokies return to action on Wed., Jan. 21 , when they host No. 14/12 Virginia at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum. The game with be the third consecutive against a nationally-ranked opponent.
