Cook suffers torn ACL
ACC leading scorer lost for season

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech redshirt-senior women’s basketball player Brittany Cook will be out for the 2008-09 season after suffering a torn ACL in her right knee in a Nov. 6 practice. Surgery has been scheduled for next week. She missed the 2004-05 season following surgery on her left knee.

Cook, a team captain along with Amber Hall, led the ACC in scoring average (17.9) and was a second team All-ACC selection. She set the school record with her 36-point effort at Miami last season. Cook, who became the 21st member of the Tech 1000-point club last year, was named the MVP of the Tulane DoubleTree Classic after recording 28 points in the title game versus Robert Morris. She led the team in scoring and rebounding (6.4) and was second in three-point field goals made (30). She also ranked first on the team in field goal percentage (.502) and was 95-of-124 (.766) from the free throw line. Cook, who has already used a redshirt season, will apply for a sixth year of eligibility.

“I’m going to do my best to turn this negative into a positive,” said Cook. “I’ll do all that I can to help our team continue to develop even though I won’t be out on the floor. Once the surgery is over, I’ll start rehabbing immediately and begin to work my way back. Hopefully, I’ll have the opportunity to play for Virginia Tech next season.”

A graduate student majoring in health promotion, Cook was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s Basketball University Division Third team last year. Additionally, she was named to both the ACC Academic Honor Roll and All-ACC Academic Women’s Basketball team.

Tech opens the 2008-09 season on Fri., Nov. 14, in a 6 p.m. contest versus UNC Greensboro.
