March 20, 2004Head Coach Rene Portland
"We are certainly pleased to be here. The kids have worked very very hard to put themselves in this position and it all came to life with them last Sunday night. We have practiced with a new enthusiasm and a new intensity. At this time of year it brings a lot of desperation of who you are and how good you want to be. We were pleased to get off campus and get on the plane and come here and feel like we're at the NCAA tournament."
On the No.1 vs. No. 16 match-ups:
"I think the best thing you can do is turn on the men's NCAA bracket right now and watch some of the things that are happening on the men's side. I think that everyone is aware that a 12 [seed] will beat somebody or a 13 [seed] will beat somebody. The predetermined teams that you just assume ... are going to do well are no longer in it. This is a generation that deals with what they see, so you talk the men's bracket."
"I have great confidence in the leadership of this team. I think there are four great leaders on this team and I think they understand this situation and pull the team together. Watching these four at practice, I can tell what the leaders are saying by their body language and I think they're going to be OK."
Student-Athlete Jessica Brungo On being a No. 1 seed:
"I think it gives us excitement coming in. We knew that we had a good schedule coming into this year and we worked really hard all year, and it's an accomplishment for us. But now we're starting it all over again and it's a whole new ball game and we have to prove ourselves again."
On winning a national championship:
"It being our senior year, we understand that this is it. But, as far as this team, it's really important too because we've been playing together for so long, and, for us to win as a team, it would be very special."
Student-Athlete Kelly Mazzante
"The past couple of weeks it has been one and done. It's tournament time and we understand the concept of that. We've tried to raise our level of practice because we understand how important these next couple of weeks are."
