BAYAMON, Puerto Rico -- Despite an impressive 8-1 run that tied the match up at 2-2 and forced a deciding fifth set, the Virginia Tech volleyball team could not complete an impressive comeback as Alabama topped the Hokies, 3-2, on Thursday evening in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Junior Stacey Christy came off the bench to hit .571 with a block and senior Lindsey Owens posted her fourth double-double of the season for the Hokies (3-1). Sophomore Rhegan Mitchell finished with 43 assists and five total blocks, both match-highs.
After the Crimson Tide took an early 1-0 lead in the match, Tech responded with a convincing 25-14 win. The Hokies trailed 2-0 early in the set before rattling off an 8-1 run, including three kills from junior Ashley Battle, forcing Alabama to call a timeout.
Alabama went up 2-1 in the match after the third set but the Hokies showed off its toughness in the fourth. Christy entered the rotation with Tech trailing and made her presence felt after a kill that cut the deficit to 21-20 and another kill that tied the match at 2-2.
Ultimately, the Hokies could not contain Alabama All-American Krystal Rivers, who proved to be the difference-maker and posted three of her match-high 22 kills in the fifth set.
MATCH NOTES
-The setback puts Tech at 3-1 on the season with Temple up next at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
-To go along with her match-high 43 assists, sophomore Rhegan Mitchell set a new career-high with five blocks, including two solo rejections.
-Owens’ 14 digs against the Tide gives her 989 for her career, putting her closer to 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her time at Tech.
-After fighting of injuries the last couple of seasons, Christy has asserted herself in the middle thus far in 2016 where she’s hitting .421 with four blocks in eight sets played.
-Freshman Gaby Senties saw extensive playing time as she set a career-high with four digs.
