BLACKSBURG – Despite well-balanced court with three double-doubles, the Virginia Tech volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon. The Hokies slide to 13-7, 4-4 in conference play, while the Yellow Jackets improve to the same standings.
Virginia Tech prevailed through an opening set loss to even up the score at 1-1 but ultimately fell shy in four sets. The Hokies spread the court as three recorded double-figure kills and four collected double-figure digs. Lindsey Owens and Kennedy Bryan led the offense, slugging 12 kills apiece while registering 13 and 10 digs, respectively. Jaila Tolbert set a career high of 10 kills in the contest. Rhegan Mitchell steadied the Hokies, assisting 41 with 10 digs. Kenedy McGrath grounded the defense, pacing Tech with 15 digs.
Georgia Tech’s Teegan Van Gunst downed 23 kills, attacking at a .352 clip, with 14 digs in her double-double. Sydney Wilson came up with 10 additional kills while London Ackermann posted 17 digs with a team-high of two aces.
The Yellow Jackets jumped to an early 5-9 lead in the opening frame. However, Owens’ six kills put the Hokies in position to tie up the set 10 times. The score went back and forth until Van Gunst tallied consecutive kills before adding the final point, securing the 22-25 decision.
The Hokies showed their fight in the second frame, securing a 3-0 start to the stanza with a kill by Ashley Battle. Georgia Tech bounced back to ensure 13 tie scores with six lead changes but Virginia Tech proved victorious, 25-23, evening up the match at 1-1.
Coming out of the intermission, Van Gunst swatted eight kills in the third set alone. Tolbert downed three kills while Haley Price slugged an ace at a crucial moment in the set but the Hokies could not overcome the Yellow Jackets, 18-25.
Mirroring the second set, Battle opened the set with a kill to give Tech an early advantage. The Yellow Jackets rallied to quickly even up the score. With Alex Toben on the line to serve, the Hokies narrowed the deficit to a mere two points. However, Georgia Tech prevailed, securing the 25-20 win.
The Hokies hit the road next weekend, facing Wake Forest Friday and Duke Sunday. The match against the Blue Devils will be aired on RSN.
