BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team rolled past rival Virginia, 3-0 (28-26, 25-14, 25-17) to close out the 2012 season on Friday evening at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.
The Hokies (16-14, 9-11 ACC) honored seniors Cara Baarendse, Morgan O’Neill, Liz Trinchere and Jennifer Wiker prior to tonight’s match.
Samantha Gostling led all attackers with nine kills for Tech. Wiker added eight and Baarendse had seven. Jordan Fish put up 23 assists with Allison Munter adding 15.
On the defensive side, O’Neill recorded 20 digs and Baarendse posted 12. Gostling, Victoria Hamsher and LaTasha Samson-Akpan had three blocks each.
Jessica O’Shoney tallied eight kills for the Cavaliers. Tori Janowski posted 20 assists. Emily Rottman had 12 digs on the defensive side while Morgan Blair recorded five blocks.
In the opening set, the Hokies got out to the early lead, going on top 12-7. Tech maintained its lead and was up 23-18, but Virginia responded with a 5-0 run to tie the set at 23. The Hokies and ‘Hoos tied at 24, 25 and 26 before back-to-back kills from Tech’s Baarendse and Fish secured the set, 28-26.
Virginia Tech jumped out quick in the second set, taking an early 12-8 lead. The Hokies extended their advantage to 18-10. Virginia would get no closer than seven as Tech rolled to the 25-14 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was close early as the Hokies were up 6-4 before going on a 10-1 run to take a 16-5 advantage. Virginia looked to make a run late as the ‘Hoos closed the gap to five at 16-11. UVa would get no closer than five the rest of the set as Tech held on to its advantage to claim the 25-17 win, clinching the match 3-0.
Virginia Tech hit .208 (40-19-101) on the attack while UVa hit .059 (22-16-101). The Hokies tallied 53 digs to the Hoos’ 37. The Cavaliers led on the block, recording 11 team blocks to Tech’s six. Tech posted eight aces to UVa’s three.
This match marked the final regular season contest for both teams for the 2012 season.
