BLACKSBURG – Rounding out a dominant weekend, the Virginia Tech volleyball team made it back-to-back sweeps with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-17) win over the Boston College Eagles in an ACC match at Cassell Coliseum on Saturday evening. This marked the first time this season that the Hokies have tallied two straight sweeps in conference play.

Justine Record notched five of Tech’s 10 service aces in the match, while also adding 12 digs and seven kills. Jennifer Wiker was again in control on offense, as she paced Tech for the fourth straight match, this time with nine kills.

Record set the tone for the match right in the beginning, earning two aces on her first three serves to help Tech (15-13, 8-9 in the ACC) gain some early momentum. The aces helped spark a 9-2 opening run, and the Hokies never looked back. A big block from Victoria Hamsher and Erin Leaser pushed Tech’s lead to 16-6 and forced the Eagles (7-21, 3-14 ACC) to call their final timeout of the set, and Leaser later dumped the ball over the net to close out the set, 25-14. The Hokies took the kills lead 11-10, as Wiker tallied five of those, and Record put up three aces in the opener.

A solo block by Leaser began the second set, and Record added to the quick point by upping her ace total to five with back-to-back aces on her opening serve. Boston College climbed its way back into it, getting to within one on multiple occasions. A 4-1 run by the Hokies midway through the set gave Tech just the boost it needed to regain its early momentum. Stringing together four straight points, the Hokies entered the break with a 2-0 lead in the match, earning a 25-16 win in the second set. Tech dominated offensively, taking the kills edge 14-9.

The Eagles opened the third set by taking their first lead of the match with an early kill from Kellie Barnum. After no ties or lead changes in the first two sets, the third set saw eight ties and five lead changes. Breaking a 15-all tie, the Hokies closed out the final set with four straight points. Tech claimed a 25-17 victory to end the evening.

The Hokies walked away with the kills lead, 36-30, as well as the digs edge, 48-42. Dominating the net, Tech was able to hold Boston College to a .089 hitting percentage, as it totaled 11 blocks, compared to the Eagles’ three. Tech hit at a .287 clip in the outing.

Leaser tossed up 28 assists, while Laura Misiewicz again led the defense with 14 digs. Wiker set a new season high with three solo blocks, while Kathryn Caine led the squad with five blocks.

Krystle Higgins paced the Eagles’ offense with eight kills on the day, while Cagla Sen tallied 14 assists in the match. Brennan Clark led the defense with 14 digs.

Tech returns to action Friday, Nov. 18, as it remains home at Cassell Coliseum to face North Carolina. The match starts at 7 p.m.
