BLACKSBURG, Va. – Earning its first season sweep of the year, the Virginia Tech volleyball team claimed a dominant 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-20) win over the Maryland Terrapins at Cassell Coliseum Friday evening. Justine Record upped her season double-double total to 10, throwing down 15 kills and tallying 11 digs. Maddi Lee led the Maryland offense with 10 kill in the match.
Jennifer Wiker paced the Hokie offense for the third-straight match as she notched 16 kills, while Cara Baarendse extended her double-digit kills match streak to eight as she registered 10 on the night.
Tech (14-13, 7-9 ACC) opened the match with a 7-2 run to gain some early momentum and quickly extended that lead to 12-4. Maryland (9-19, 3-13 ACC) was unable to get anything going in the set as the Hokies closed out with an 8-3 run to take the opener. Tech saw the kills lead, 12-8, while hitting at a .393 clip and holding the Terps to a .000 hitting percentage.
The Hokies battled through some close play to open the second set, but they soon began to pull away and force Maryland to call a timeout when a block from Victoria Hamsher made it 13-9. Maryland worked its way back into it and got as close as one, but immediately following that point the Hokies strung together a 6-0 run to create some distance. The difference was too large for the Terps to overcome and three straight points from the Hokies sealed the second-set win, 25-17. Record paced the offense with six of Tech’s 19 kills, while Baarendse and Wiker each added five. The Hokies also dominated on the defensive end, taking the digs lead 24-17, as 11 of those came from Laura Misiewicz.
With the help of an 8-0 run to begin the third set the Hokies carried the momentum through the break and into what would be the final set. Never looking back from there, Tech allowed the Terps to hang around for a bit but never get close enough to threaten. The Hokies took the final set 25-20 as Wiker and Record combined for 14 of Tech’s 18 kills in the set, topping Maryland’s 13. Misiewicz scooped up 11 digs for the second straight set as the Hokies took the 20-15 digs edge.
The Hokies walked away with the advantage in every statistical category including kills (49-30), assists (43-26) and digs (59-45).
Misiewicz finished the night with 24 digs, while Erin Leaser tallied 37 assists in the match, Hamsher led the net game with four blocks.
Remy McBain tossed up 19 assists in the match, while Sarah Harper led the Maryland defense with 14 digs.
Tech returns to the court tomorrow night as it hosts Boston College at Cassell Coliseum at 6 p.m.
