LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech track & field team earned several top-five finishes at Liberty’s Twilight Qualifier at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex on Wednesday.

Shanel Burr and Jada Gundran started the day off strong for the Hokies, placing second and third in the 100-meter hurdle prelims to advance to finals. The pair finished in the same positions in the final, clocking in at 13.80 and 14.33, respectively.

On the men’s side, Aaron Simpson set a personal record in the 110-meter hurdles to qualify for finals. Simpson clocked in in the prelims at 14.46 and placed fourth in the final.

In the 200 meters, Courtney Blanden led the Hokies with her 24.02-finish, placing second overall. Ama-Selina Tchume took fifth while Burr set a personal record with her ninth place finish. Darius Watkins led the men’s team with a sixth place, 21.15-finish.

Blanden’s success continues with a third place finish in the 400-meter dash with his 55.22-time.

Gundran set a new person record in the 400-meter hurdles to place second overall - first collegian. On the men’s side, Alexander Merritt clocked in at 54.46, placing third while Austin Kolko took second.

Tech’s women’s pole vaulters led the field events with a pair of third place finishes. Hannah Meador and Olivia Privitera cleared the 3.56-meter (11-8) mark each on their second attempt.

Collin McKenny reached the 46.73-meter (153-4) mark on his fourth attempt to place fourth in a field of 19 competitors.

Ryan Shepard wrapped up the day, clearing 1.91-meters (6-3.25) to place fourth overall.

Tech wraps up the regular season on Thursday, hosting the Hokie Twilight Qualifier at the Johnson/Miller Track Complex.
